the proclamation made no mention of giselle's homelessness or troop 6,000 but a reminder for giselle that people were expecting her to be great. she had to make troop 6,000 bigger than 8 girls whereas giselle burgess' work have had ripple effect, and the girls she recruits and mentors goes onto build a better world and community and ms. burgess is an incredible role model to not only her five children but children across queens whereas giselle have truly enriched all of us with service and worthy of the esteem of all new yorkers, now therefore be it known that majority leader of the new york city council gratefully honors giselle for her outstanding service and enduring contributions to the community. expectations were now in writing. giselle gave herself two weeks to find volunteers and to recruit more girls. so, giselle, tell us what happened next? [laughter] >> yeah, after that, it was really time to like hit the road and just keep on going, you know, so i remember going back to the office, putting together this flier, you know, recruiting volunteers and recruiting girls. i printe

let me introduce our speakers tonight, giselle burgess is a visionary and program manager of "troop 6000" a girl scout program designed to serve girls in the new york city shelter system, after living with her five children a great need a benefit for a program like this to be offered with girls living in the shelter system as well, she been recognized for her dedication by her community and local councilman and she's received a proclamation from the city of new york for her outstanding service, achievements in her community and devoting her life to empowering and uplifting women throughout queens, giselle and her daughters continue to advocate for girls and women living in the shelter system and are determined to make the stigma of homelessness. we will talk to nikita stewart who is a reporter with the new york times, and they recognized her in 2018 for coverage of homelessness, mental health and poverty. she's been a finalist for the livingston award and investigators award enjoying the new york times in 2014 after working with washington, she was with us a few weeks ago to interview an

hi gisele and karina. one of the things i wanted to talk about tonight is that this story goes way back before 2017. we first saw each other across the room and 20 feet teen and i had no idea that you all would experience homelessness and i would end up writing a book about your journey. in 2015 i had taken on the beat of social services and poverty for "the news york times" and i decided i would go to any shelter that anyone ever invited me to. so a councilmember in queens invited me to go to a shelter in queens that had been made out of a hotel. i showed up and i was surprised to see all of these girl scout serving the thanksgiving lunch. karina and her sisters were there and gisele was there and i didn't write anything that day. just saw the inside of the shelter and met the women experiencing homelessness and while those girl scouts sure were cute. fast-forward a year later giselle was in the shelter system and then she came up with an idea for troops 6000. i will read to you a little bit from the chap

a check me a while to get in touch with gisele that then i did the initial interview over the phone. i said this will be a terrific story but now it is like scouts in action. and then it went viral and i thought i guess i should write a book and see what happens. i had no idea if troop 6000 would flourish or fail but i remember i sat down with gisele in the breakfast room but i said would you be willing to allow me to be in your life and the life of your girls and said absolutely. but i am still amazed at your candor and honesty and allowing me into your life for all the other parents and girl scouts that participated and i mean allowed me to follow them. that we all got through it and i hope the reader see what i did over 18 months. >> i have a question. during the whole time you have gotten to know was what is the most challenging moment for you? >> the camping trip was challenging in terms because i didn't know if troop 6000 would flourish or fail. oh no. what if it falls apart? that was the most difficult part. when people say things that's not right. and then to eat you up. and

. >> this one is for giselle. what advice do you have for encouraging and recruiting female parent leaders in you and things like this? >> good one. for recruiting, i will always say food brings everyone to gather. having a meal, breaking bread with someone, sitting down and connecting with that person, finding a mutual - having the conversation and opening up with what i am doing, giving them to a tough situation, in a better direction in life offering opportunities support and we are in a tough situation, what we mean on a little bit. we need to see down to earth and realize as fast as we can, stretching the importance of this. >> a couple more questions. you up for it? iris asks what girl scout level you are. >> i am a senior. >> heidi asks can karina talk about her living situation and how speaking out broke the stereotype of who homeless people are? >> it is the type of thing that you don't really think about, what the meaning is, making a defense, the stereotype in new york city is you see someone going on a
