after last week's snowstorms in northwestern nevada, jay glanton and his girlfriend, christina mcinteesnow with their two kids and her niece and nephew. but their jeep flipped over, after hitting an embankment. they survived two nights in below zero temperatures. the children were ages 3 to 10 doctors and rescuers say being ready for the cold, with heavy winter clothing may have helped save their lives. six people who spent two days stranded in the snow are in fairly good condition. rescuers finally found them in the frigid mountains of nevada, tuesday afternoon. as andrew spencer reports. temperatures hit 21-degrees below zero in the area where a family of six disappeared. after two days stranded in the wilderness, rescuers began to lose hope that the family had survived. "i was expecting the worst and when i came around the corner and i counted all six of them standing there nice and warm." lucky that james glanton, a hunter, knew how to keep his family from freezing to death. >> awesome. all the kids were warm. their dad did an excellent job. >> reporter: the first thing they did right? rescuers say when they ran into trouble, they did not go looking for help. they stayed together with the vehicle, their best source of shelter. >> people that stay with the car survive. >> reporter: the most ingenious thing they did was to use the spare tire as a makeshift fire pit. burning twigs, branches, dry brush, even heating up rocks to take back to the car to keep warm. some of the rescuers said they'd never seen that trick before. >> and he was able to keep that fire going the entire time while they were out. and i think that really prevented any serious medical problems for them to develop. >> reporter: the third thing that saved them, they kept their cell phone on. the signal was too weak to make a call but strong enough that authorities were able to find it and them. >> almost everybody carries a cell phone now. we're able to pinpoint to some great degree where the actual ph

authorities saying 34-year-old james glanton, 25-year-old christina, their two children plus a niecewere found in fairly good condition. they were found inside their car, which had turned over and turned on its roof. miguel almaguer is in nevada. miguel, tell us what you learned about how they were able to stay alive until rescue workers were able to find them. >> reporter: thomas, the sheriff's department says they did all the right things to stay alive. apparently after that jeep overturned, we're told that the family was able to huddle together. the father and girlfriend keeping the children inside the car as they were able to start a small fire, gather enough material to start a small fire. they then heated up large rocks and made these rocks a heat source. took them in or very close to that jeep that then warmed up the sblr of the car where the children were taking safety. we're also told that the family had rationed out some food that they had brought. of course the kids and the two adults had come out for a day in the snow, so they were dressed properly, although they certainl
