glen campbell. now an extraordinary and raw interview.e opens up about his final act. >> it's a brave thing. >> i don't know how brave it is. >> announcer: from the global resources of abc news, with terry moran, cynthia mcfcfden and bill weir in new york city, this is "nightline," august 23rd, 2011. >> good evening. we begin tonight with that 5.8 magnitude earthquake outside washington, d.c. today, which grabbed the attention of millimeters on the east coast. one indication, twitter counted more than 5500 tweets per second. so many people were on their cell phones that some service went out. the white house was evacuated and all the national monuments were closed for safety inspections. lala tonight, the national park service reported a crack was discovered in the top of the washington monument. here's abc's david muir with the east coast unexpected case of the shakes. >> reporter: we were pulling into the train station in washington, d.c. when the station suddenry began to wildly shake. officers yelling to us and to everyone to get out.

>>> and glen campbell. the first tv interview about his diagnosis of alzheimer's disease. preparing for a courageous farewell tour as a last gift for his fans. ♪ >>> good evening. at 1:51 this afternoon, millions of us on the east coast, together, looked up and it did not seem possible. the room was moving. but an earthquake, here? and one of the strongest ever in this part of the country. a 5.8 magnitude, lasting 30 seconds. take a look. the camera is fixed on the white house, see it shaking? and the national cathedral in washington loses the tip of a spire. and as we said, people were racing into the streets, including that bride, here in new york. the epicenter of the quake was near mineral, virginia, but the quake roiled the ground from massachusetts to south carolina and all the way west to chicago and milwaukee. we're going to tell you the latest on the nuclear plants along this coast, but let's begin with abc's david muir, weekend anchor, who was pulling into union station in washington when that quake hit. what a surprise, david. >> reporter: it was really extraord

you were standing next to a man 49-year-old glen goodrich moments before the collapse.wound up dead. tell us about the conversation the two of you had. >> hi, yeah, that was -- it was some evening. i was backstage, and the police officers were all busy, so i started talking to glen for a little bit, and we could see that the weather was getting worse and worse, and so he was telling me a little bit about himself. he told me he had two children, he was married. he told me he was a former police officer himself. we just had a good time talking for just a few minutes. that was the first time i'd met him, and then i could see the storm coming in, and i just said, glen, we're going to get wet. i'm going to go under the stands so i don't have to be out here in the rain. and he said, that's right, chaplin you go ahead and keep dry. so i walked away across the path, the dirt path underneath the stands. i heard everybody scream and i turned back and i just saw the stage collapse. and for the next two hours i was working to they with rescue and helping people that were injured. m

there have been robberies in glen park and parts of the valley. there have been shootings in diamond heights. one of the challenges is making sure that the police department understands that even though we may not have the same crime levels as some neighborhoods, we still need attention from the police department. >> let's talk about the city's economic development. are we on the right track? what would you like to change about the approach to developing the economy? >> we are getting better. the city as got more proactive about attracting businesses and new industries and providing incentives for them to come and stay here. it is still a very expensive place to do business in terms of the cost of labor, land. we need to make sure that we are not taxing businesses to the point that it is not profitable and we are not attractive for them to be here. we need to reform our payroll tax. that is an incentive not to create jobs. i know the board president david chu is working on possibility this there -- possibilities there. i look forward to working wi

to find a way that we could have this one-on-one with an aide and camper experience, and wonderful glen canyon's the ideal place, i have to tell you, rather than a flat land, because of its location and the fact it is in a canyon that most of our kids, our special campers, are runners. that means if they are let go, they go. and because of this natural surrounding, it's almost like nature is giving them a big bear hug there in glen canyon and they can't run up the hill. they are safe, they are enclosed. vicky put together marvelous program. had some special tents just for kids. when meltdowns did occur because kids with autism often like being in closed areas. they feel safer. and a lot of the typical camp, why can't i have autism? i want to go into that tent, too. so i would like to just tell you a couple of the benefits and play a three-minute video on it. it of course prior to this year those four weeks were summertime in general are really difficult for parents. if you have a child with autism, you really do have to dedicate your life to that. my wife -- very successful venture capi

glen says washington wasn't a very popular place for the family because of her. well, what i discovered was she went to washington with him regularly until 1835. by 1835, she had buried all six of her daughters, she had about six or seven grandchildren that she was raising here at ashland. and she, you know, she just did not have the time to go to washington. she had other responsibility. when she was in washington, she basically supported his career, and was hardly the recluse that historians have painted her as being. the sons had their problems, and there is a strain of mood disorder that is evident in the early generations. all five of his sons suffered from melancholy or depression. melancholy was the 19th century term. with one exception, they became successful businessmen, one served in the house of representatives, one served in the state legislature, one -- two of them were tremendous horseman. they contributed significantly to the horse industry? kentucky. so they were more than historians have described them as. and i began to see this and thought the

had a $15,000 grant, and this is our summer camp for children of the autism spectrum, conducted in glen canyon. this is extra staff for children who need this, and they will be working with mainstream silver creativity's. we also received last friday, 1251 week camp scholarships from the children across the city. this year, and we will talk more about this next month, we have awarded a half million dollars in scholarships to children who need them fulfilling the commitment to make certain that all the children participate in all of the programs regardless of ability to pay. i was actually looking -- >> this is an event done by mercedes, and the 50th anniversary -- discarded viewed in 1961 and is 50 years old, and if they offer up the car, this would be worth a lot more. we brought kids down to see all the cars, many of them had never been down here, and we arranged perfect weather, so this was very lovely and we're very happy for the support of mercedes. we have had a number of groundbreakings, but rather than have me talk about them, this time for this month at the parks and recreation
