do you think that could actually hurt the republican candidate glen youngkin? big lie and the continued lie we hear from former president trump and his allies when it comes to elections in voting. it can. because what we are hearing from republicans is that they are not as confident particularly when it comes to voting by mail and voting early. the question is whether republican hess tans will be offset by democrats' frustrations with their elected officials. >> one democratic leader told politico, quote, i think we are on track to be a blue state for years and years because the growth here in virginia makes it inevitable. until then we have a lot of suburban voters who are very swingy and decide these elections up and down the ticket. we will win if folks turn out but everyone should be very worried. take a look at this. this is all the surrogates that the democrats are bringing in. at least a couple presidents, first lady, second husband. vp klobuchar. mayor, stacey abrams, current governor. that's a lot of heavy hitters. >> they're bringing in the big guns.

do you think the idea of trying to tie glen youngkin, the gubernatorial nominee to donald trump, that works on suburban voters or do people think, it's not the same person? >> i think it works in northern virginia. in southern virginia, richmond area, it's more complicated. virginia has become northern virginia so that's the make-up. that's why you start to see this distance put in the poll numbers. >> i don't think it works when donald trump is off the stage. when you haven't seen donald trump in a few weeks and glen youngkin does not present as a donald trump type person. but when donald trump inserts himself in this and you remind him and see him every day it's going to stick more. i'm sure glen youngkin would love donald trump for the next two weeks to just shut up. >> there was an interview where senator cassidy, i think it was, a republican of louisiana, said he would not want donald trump to be the nominee. he would not support him, but yet, at the same time, there's a new poll i just saw out earlier today showing a significant amount and in fact a higher percentage than just a

not actually a thing, so i think for terry mcauliffe there are two challenges, and one is that glen youngkindonald trump. if terry mcauliffe was running against donald trump it would be a completely different race but youngkin has a mass appeal to kind of the center or slightly right of center or -- well, probably not left center but center and right of center and that's making this a more real race. he has acquitted himself very well as a candidate and he has taken this deliberate step away from trump, not really -- not really talking trash about trump but being very careful to make clear he's not aligning himself as a trump candidate and that's giving some assurances to virginia voters in the middle and that's gotten mcauliffe in a more defensive position and the other is the school issue because, look, it sounds like what mcauliffe is trying to say i'm not going to let irresponsible parents who are against science terrorize school administrators and making your kids unsafe. that's actually not what he says. it's just not what he said at all so, of course, it will be used against him. >> t

mcauliffe is in the fight of his career, locked in a tight race against glen youngkin. they are close. it is neck and neck. they are one week out from counting votes. joining me now cnn chief national affairs correspondent jeff zeleny and jack from public radio. early voting has been under way. what are you hearing from voters? >> kate, early voting has been under way for more than a month. more than 734,000 virginians have already voted, and both sides believe this will be on the way to a record-setting turnout here. 2.6 million people voted in the last governor's race, so there definitely is a lot of enthusiasm, but democrats are worried that there's more enthusiasm on the republican side for newcomer glen youngkin. he's a businessman, has never run for public office before. of course terry mcauliffe is a familiar face, longtime democrat, served as governor for four years. but virginia is the only state in the country that only alolow its governors to serve one term at a time. so he's applying for his old job. the economy was good in that period. but this is a differe

glen youngkin so far has threaded the needle and he's made it much harder for democrats to say that thiskin in virginia like they did against trump. >> that's right, and youngkin is trying to keep his distance from trump. youngkin also benefits from increased republican enthusiasm that maybe is connected to trump in some ways but youngkin maybe feels like he doesn't need to cultivate it as much as -- as maybe he might think. you know, you see this in virginia, too, this happens in mid-term elections as well that the party that doesn't hold the white house somehow has a turnout and enthusiasm advantage in the off-year races. the youngkin voters and republicans generally express a little more enthusiasm or sometimes a lot more enthusiasm about voting in this election so you're seeing terry mcauliffe bringing in a lot of the national democratic folks as a way to stoke enthusiasm. the good thing for mcauliffe is virginia is not really a purple state, kind of a bluish state. joe biden wrong it by ten points, the biggest democratic margin for victory in president in virginia since 1964 so lynd
