glendale is an upscale neighborhood about 35 miles to the east, northeast of l.a. about 50,000 residents in the foothills of the san gabriel mountains. that's what you're looking at right now. early this morning when the fire started at about 5:55, the winds were coming from the east. not quite the santa ana winds velocity, but driving the fire down the mountain towards those homes. i was looking at the notes i took this morning at about 7:15, when there were embers bouncing all through those neighborhoods. so this moved very quickly. you can hear the anchors saying it's amazing how quickly this fire is spreading. as you said, right now, the 500 acres -- 500 homes or so in one neighborhood. 1,700 acres have been burned at this point. the good news is meter logically speaking that the winds seem to have abated and they've shifted to some parts of the fire line. in that indication, they're coming from the east. but in other parts that we've seen, the flames have gone straight up. the smoke is turning white instead of dark. probably a good sign. however, the fire is s
