glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here now with our forecast. glenn? >> vai, we have issues of first alert for today. this afternoon, into this evening, because we have got a triple threat here. it is relatively brief snowfall. that's not the biggest problem. accumulating sleet. those are the frozen rain drops that bounce when they hit the ground and also some freezing rain in parts of the area. it is all going to impact the evening rush today. here is the storm right now. the storm is in the blue the darker blue is the heavier snow. the leading edge already starting to get into berks county. it is back to the west and it is moving right into this direction. it is going to start as snow. temperatures are below freezing. the ground is being cold. so any untreated surfaces that snow is going to stick when it comes in here. it is not even above freezing in southern parts of our area. here is the general timing 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. the snow starts. in general, across the area not every place. but 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. that's when we're getting the changeover to s

more snow tomorrow, glenn? a few part of the area getting more significant snow than even what they saw this morning. a lot of us will be seeing rain though. that wind that's bringing in warmer air. it's already a good bit warmer than it was over the weekend. at least for this time of the day. we're rising into the mid-40s right now, 36 in mount pocono. still kind of cold for this time of the year. after that weekend we just went through, that was pretty brutal for the end of march. the last of the showers from earlier today have gone through. snow showers in parts of the area. today 46 degrees at noon 55 though at 3:00. probably peaking in the upper 50s in parts of the area. wind is going to be a factor all day. and then we watch for the next system coming in from the west. mostly rain with it but some places getting some snow as well. more on the timing and huge contrast across the area tomorrow with the seven-day in a few minutes. >>> charges could be filed in the shooting death of off duty police officer in

nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz here with the forecast. glenn? >> we have a rainy day today, temperatures are milder but we have a first alert for tonight, especially late tonight and into tomorrow because things are going to change pretty rapidly while you're asleep tonight. that rain changing to snow and in many cases heavy snow. it is going to be snowing for the morning rush across much of the area. and possibly heavy snow during that period, leading to the biggest snowfall of the season. most likely 4.8 inches is the biggest in philadelphia so far and we have a very good chance of exceeding that. there is a winter storm warning for virtually the entire area except for the lehigh valley and poconos, which actually is going to get less snow than just about any other part of the area. there is the path now. just patchy light rain and there isn't a whole lot more coming. so it is not going to be a real wet few hours here. but look what is back to the west. not only heavier rain but this is the snow area. that's going to arrive right along that an

glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here with the forecast. glenn?we have some big changes coming over the next 24 hours. not going to be looking like this tomorrow. this is the poconos and you can see some of the high thin clouds starting to come over even in the poconos, going to be just about all rain out of this next system. so that is going to be the end of a lot of snow after this. so 31 in the poconos now. but it will be warming up. 34 in allentown. 39 in trenton. mount holly and also in wilmington. now, we continue to see the dry air across our part of the country, but that rain is getting closer and closer. it is already now into west virginia and parts of southwestern virginia. look how big the area is. it is not that it is so heavy, and concentrated with heavy rain, but it is just a very large area and that means a lot of hours of rain during the day tomorrow. today, no rain even by 6:00 just cloudy skies, temperature getting up to about 5 or low 50s today. we'll talk more about the timing of the rain tomorrow when it ends with the seven-d

good morning, glenn. >>> good morning. right now for the next few hours we have to watch the weather and roads. we have to watch the sidewalks because we have a first alert out for potential icing. let's see what we've got here. the first alert goes until 9:00 a.m. across a good portion of the area. we'll look for light freezing rain. as the sun comes up it's going to melt with temperatures going up. we've got i-95 looking just fine. people are driving, but you have to watch out as there's a little bit of moisture. if it looks wet, it's possibly icy in the area northward. the area near us most of that precipitation is not reaching the ground. if it did and it keeps trying to fall long enough it's going to reach the ground. and that would be in the form of freezing rain as you can see parts of chester county montgomery bucks county berks, lehigh valley getting potential icing. but these are the actual surface reports. just cloudy skies. we are watching minute by minute to make sure that nothing is icing. you can see 29 degr

glenn? >> yeah, keith. as we get closer and closer to the noon hour we're looking for any kind of signs of the storm moving out. haven't seen much. at least not yet. we have been monitoring city avenue here and the traffic is moving okay. heavily traveled roads that have been plowed over and over again seem to be passable like i-95 for example. but a lot of the other roads not very good shape. you look at the size of this area of snow. it is huge. and we have some darker blues, some heavier snow down by baltimore and washington. that's about to move up into new castle county. about to get your heaviest snow of the whole storm there. and the back edge of it not moving very much. and so that means hour after hour of more snow. fairly heavy burst in the philadelphia area now. and across the river into burlington county. lightening up in chester county put that isn't necessarily a permanent thing. there is another area of heavier snow up in lehigh valley berks county certainly more snow up there than was expect

let's get right to nbc 10 meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. what's the latest glenn? ping tourcture in south philly. we've shown you that picture all morning and you could see very clearly but not anymore. the rain/snow line is still fairly stalled from atlantic city to just south of dover. what that means is look at cape may, just getting some rain. but back to the west that snow area is not budging. and it's getting heavier and heavier as we go through the morning. the visibilities continue to go down. a half mile visibility is fairly heavy snow and we've got more and more places with that and so during the day today, the snow getting heavier, at least for the next few hours. temperatures dropping. >> the snow can lead to slick roads. let's get a check on traffic from jillian mele. >> no big accidents to report but we are seeing slippery conditions. this is 76 right near the conshohocken curve. we had an accident earlier on 95 right near the airport. it was a vehicle that spun out and lost control. most of that accident scene has been cleared. it looks like this com

let's begin with chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. where's the rest of the snow right now? >> well it is exiting stage right into new jersey. you can see the live shot of i-95. we've been watching all afternoon. not seeing snowflakes. the traffic is moving fine. and the visibility is improved. we continue to have the first alert out there. not just for the messy roads that exist right now but also for the potential of freezing drizzle as we go into the night. there will be a lot of moisture hanging around. not a lot of wind. we're not going to see the humidity drop a lot. that could create some icy spots early on saturday until the sun comes up. you can see over the six-hour period, everything is moving. to the east. and ending in lancaster county berks county lehigh valley poconos, about to end in chester county. it's even changed to rain in some areas. and what a sharp edge from heavy snow in northern burlington county to heavy rain in southern burlington county. that's pretty amazing. it's now raining in northern delaware and just

>> glenn, by tomorrow morning we could be in the 20s? >> yes. and still with a little bit of wind making it feel like the teens in some parts of the area. you can see the wind is making the cameras shake, it's so strong. and it is going to continue to be strong for at least a few more hours. we're down to 54 in philadelphia. we got up to 68 degrees in noon. so it's dropped quite a bit. it's down to 43 in allentown and 32 at mt. pocono. it was 71 in dover. now it's 59, so those winds really doing -- doing their damage here. it's 41-mile-an-hour wind gusts in mt. pocono. 40 miles an hour in wilmington. 33 in philadelphia. those winds are going to die down very slowly. and the temperature goes down into the 30s this evening, so if you're headed out, you need that winter gear because there's still wind. it's going to feel like it's in the 20s this evening. by tomorrow morning, it's in the 20s. with the temperature plus a little wind making it feel even colder than that. and this is the storm we've been talking about for later in the week. lo
