joining me now is chief meteorologist glenn hurricane schwartz. he has his long range winter forecast and the news of big winter changes on the way. >> when i first did that winter forecast that was a month ago when it was extremely mild and we're talking about the pattern changing and december becoming cold. >> uh-huh. >> well, here is came. just in time for this weekend the first arctic air mass has come across and now we feel like winter and there's going to be a lot more of it. >> so we know what to expect right now. your long range forecast gives us a look at what to expect month to month. >> remember this, it's the only snowstorm we had last winter. january 22nd and 23rd. we had 22.4 inches in philadelphia which by itself made it a snow weir than normal winter. we only had 5 inches for the winter outside of that storm. but it was also a very mild winter, especially in december, our warmest on record by far. people were out in shorts as temperatures reached the 70s on christmas eve. the warm but stormy winter was aided by a record strong el n

. >> glenn "hurricane" schwartz, what are we up against? >> parts of the area are going to be seeing snow, other parts are definitely going to be seeing rain. parts are going to see snow, if they stay up there, a big crowd at camelback and they're rooting for the snow. but in the lehigh valley and berks county, you're going to be getting some snow, but it's during the morning rush, 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., and especially before the sun comes up, it has a chance of sticking at least on grassy surfaces and other untreated surfaces. the low victsibility they be a factor in causing some problems during the morning rush. quiet across the area now, there's an area of snow we're watching, and we're also watching some snow develop in indiana and that's going to combine with the snow area and expand as we go through the night tonight. by tomorrow morning, it's going to be wet. in philadelphia, that's cold rain 36 degrees. 33 degrees in camden county. the lehigh value we'll have marginal temperatures. it could potentially stick, especiallily before s

. >> nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz has your neighborhood forecast. glenn? >> quite a change from this morning. it was overcast, a little bit of rain. now we've got lots of sunshine out there. we don't have a big break until the next weather system comes in. 49 degrees in philadelphia right now, lots of sunshine across the area with temperatures generally in the upper 40s, which is about average for this time of year. there's that big area of rain down south. a lot of thunderstorms towards the gulf coast, a lot of moisture there. it will not affect the morning rush. temperatures will be in the 30s. we don't have to worry about any kind of freezing rain or sleet or snow. lehigh valley down to right around the freezing mark, not especially cold for this time of year. much of new jersey also down in the 30s. then the clouds start to increase. here is what is going to be happening. we start off the day with the clouds. then here comes the rain. generally late morning in delaware and extreme south jersey. by midday across much of the rest of the area, the

let's go now to chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. hey, glenn. >> hey, keith.ve been talking about this for more than a week. the timing was looking pretty good for new year's weekend. we had some snow flurries today with that flow coming right out of the northwest. the cold winds coming over the warm lakes. we had a few snow flurries. now that the wind has diminished a little bit, that is no longer an issue. now it's feeling like it's in the 20s across much of the area. west cowan at 29. malvern at 29. phoenixville, 32. 26 at elroy. 22, milford township. 23 in bed minister. 25 in new town. so, yeah, it's pretty chilly out there. but then it's just about january 1st, so it's supposed to be. the wind now down to 10 to 15 miles an hour. some places you can see less than 10 miles an hour. we were gusting to 40 this afternoon. we have dry air here. here's saturday. nice and dry. saturday night, nice and dry. here comes sunday. lots of sunshine there. then we look to the south for the moisture to come up, and it's not coming up until late sunday night at the earlies

let's check with glenn "hurricane" schwartz. hi, glenn. >> hi. things are progressing pretty much the way we have seen them the last couple of days. for the lehigh valley and pa suburbs and philadelphia at least far brief period of time. 11:00 p.m. friday into saturday morning is a limited time period of problems with accumulating snow, a brief icy mix and slippery roads. here is the timing. it's started morning we are focusing on. that's where the difficulties will be. snow to icy mix to rain. drier and milder. a nice afternoon by comparison. sunday morning is warm but rainy and sunday afternoon windy and colder. now, what do we see on the radar? the clouds are over the end. we are seeing a few returns back to the west. the main area is pretty elongated, not all that way organized. it will be racing down as we go through the night tonight. in the middle of the night is when the first flakes may fly. the atmosphere is trying to warm up. this is a giant area of icing. so traifl to the west will be very difficult and snow from the philadelphia area

. >> we're going to go with nbc10 chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz monitoring this bitter cold in your neighborhood. where is it going to be, glenn? >> it's going to be cold everywhere. and it's going to stay cold all weekend. 37 degrees and we're already starting to cool down, we were at 38 an hour ago, and mostly cloudy skies, even a few snowflakes in the sky in parts of the area. already down to the freezing mark in lehigh valley as they're start clear out. 3 31 miles an hour in philadelphia. the feels like temperature, 23 in coatesville, 23 in allentown, 26 in trenton, look at that, 9 in mt. pocono. and this is about as high as those feels like temperatures are going to get because they're going to go down from here, no that we go into the nighttime hours and there's still going to be some wind out there. by tomorrow morning, that should be the coldest point of the weekend, where it feels like it's around 10 to 15 degrees. so the cold air is in place and we also have some moisture on the way, that all adds up to at least a chance of some snow. and meteorologist sheena

here's chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. n, there's a lot of fog to contend with. >> yeah, you can't see the ben franklin bridge very well. and farther to the north, the fog is even more dense and may be dense by morning. it's also going to be warmer by morning. it philadelphia had a daytime high of 45. now it's 49. the southwest wind keeping warming things up. how much? look at pittsburgh. it's 65 degrees there right now. 11:00 at night in the wintertime. so obviously some of that warm air is coming in. but we also have some fog that's developed. downtown is a half mile visibility, but we're starting to see some improvement farther to the south as some of that warmer air does come in. we have the showers still in western pennsylvania. haven't even hit pittsburgh yet. so it's going to be several hours before they would make it in. mostly on the lighter side. and just for the morning hours. and watch the temperatures go up as the showers approach. 5:30 in the morning, we're in the 50s. even in allentown. and it's just a few sh

let's get an update on your neighborhood forecast from chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> you can see the flag blowing and the direction, that's a west wind and that's bringing in colder air from the great lakes and parts of the west of the country. 36 degrees in allentown, 37 in coatesville right now. they have just dropped several degrees in the last hour, 44 in philadelphia, we were 45 an hour ago. you can see a few snowflakes and rain drop coming across the mountains, might get a sprinkle in allentown in the next few minutes or a couple in the poconos, but the big thing that's going on is the cold wind over the lakes, and we'll see winds perhaps over 40 miles an hour during the day tomorrow. the temperatures as we go through the day tomorrow, it starts off not all that cold, but it doesn't really warm up much, does it? and we're barely getting to 40 depressi degrees in philadelphia. some areas we're not even getting into the 40s. as you can see, we're not even getting to 40. and with the wind gusts to 40 miles an hour or more, these numbers are going to feel more l

for that, let's go to chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz with more. n. >> yeah, jacqueline. it's dry across the entire area now, but it's not going to be in the morning. it's going to be wet and in some areas it's going to be white. this is in the lehigh valley and berks county only. those are the only areas in the first alert for some snow during the morning rush. 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. so it's just a limited time period too. could get an inch of snow on grassy surfaces. briefly low visibility as the snow comes down hard for a brief period of time. it could stick to some untreated surfaces. look how cold it is in allentown now. 23 degrees. while it's 33 in philadelphia. so those temperatures are going to be critical. the temperatures will be coming up toward daybreak, but will they come up enough to have this snow melt as it hits? that's going to be the big question. philadelphia should be warm enough for rain, and temperatures well above freezing. the p.a. suburbs, kind of a marginal case, at least in the beginning. could be some snow involved. lehi

here is nbc 10's chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz.lenn, rain is on the way. >> we've got clouds out there now, kind of reducing the visibility. we have low clouds tonight. by tomorrow morning, it could be a few showers around. i'm not expecting a whole lot of rain. i am expecting a whole lot of warming. it's already near 50 in vineland. it's only 35, though, in allentown. so they've got a long way to go. but as soon as the wind turns into the south, look what happens. pittsburgh is up to 62 degrees right now. cincinnati was in the 70s, broke records. it's 70 right now in nashville. there is colder air, that's going to eventually come in. but not for tomorrow. in philadelphia, we're all in the 40s now. 46 at the airport in graduate hospital, center city, society hill. 43 in chestnut hill and andorra. 44 degrees in parkwood. i expect several of those places to be in the 60s tomorrow. there's the arctic air over the northern plains now, heads straight to the east. we won't get really blasted as we go through the end of the week. west a l

chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz as more on your neighborhood forecast. >> yeah, keith, and a lot of delaware will be well into the 60s during the day tomorrow, especially in the afternoon, it's going to be a nice day. now you can see the traffic, less than usual, of course, coming out of center city on this sort of holiday. temperatures vary quite a bit. 35 in allentown. that's up a degree. 47 in vineland and atlanta city. temperatures are rising tonight, you don't have to worry about precipitation coming in and causing ice or snow. it will be plenty mild tomorrow morning. this is the next area of showers. most of it by the time it gets here is going to be on the light side. but the temperature jump is not light. it's pretty significant. we're jumping up into the 50s in philadelphia by 10:00 and 55 with those morning showers around at 6:00 a.m. even the lehigh valley, in the 30s at 6:00, up around 50 with some of those showers tomorrow morning. so it's a totally different kind of day than what we were seeing. once again, the clouds keeping in that all night, clouds, fog

first alert meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is out on this first mild first day of winter. >> and glenn, you were saying the cold stuff is going to stay away through the end of the year? >> i think just about until the end of the year. for new year's eve, it's going to start getting cold again. but not as cold as the last couple of days. >> we're expecting a relatively mild weekend, the skiers are still going to have a good time. because they're going to be able to make snow just about every night through the weekend there in the poconos. it's mild enough to be comfortable. but not too warm to rucin the skiing. it's 45 in dover, 42 degrees in vineland. yesterday, we barely got above freezing and tonight we're barely going to get down to freezing, a lot of clouds around, that's going to help keep the temperature up. but as you can see, it doesn't really change much from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., lehigh valley, the temperature actually goes up, it goes up in new jersey from 32 to 34. that's a sign of the atmosphere warming up and there's not much doubt about that. the milder air

. >> let's begin with nbc10 chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. glenn, how low is the temperature going to go tonight? >> the temperature is going to be in the teens, but the wind is going to make it feel like pretty close to zero. the air temperature is 20, the highest we got to during the afternoon was 25. 16 in coatesville, 19 in wilmington and in trenton. we still have a pretty good wind out there sustained at 26 miles an hour. in wilmington, we have seen combusts over 40 miles an hour during the day today, although not strong as it was earlier. but it feels like 2 below zero in coatesville, this is with the sustained winds not with the gusts. mt. pocono feels like 9 below, allentown and will mington at is. we have got more arctic air surging in during the night tonight just to keep this frigid air in. it feels like 5 degrees in trenton and vorhees. and it's not going to warm up a whole lot during the day tomorrow. but we do have precipitation on the way and that's the next weather issue. >>> for details on the weather let's focus on the timing

. >> let's get the forecast from nbc10 chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz.s just going to be getting warmer? >> temperatures are in the 40s right now, and we're going to be perhaps 10 degrees warmer than this. and even these temperatures are a little bit above average for this time of year. and we have to take a look at these temperatures as we go through the night. we have precipitation coming after midnight. and so some of the normally coldest areas have to be monitored hour by hour that's why we have neighborhood weather and all these weather stations here. redding 42, fleetwood 40, now the difference between this and the storm that we had earlier was, remember, we had the arctic air in place and everything was frozen to start off with, now we have had milder weather, the roads are a little bit warmer so it will take well below-freezing temperatures to cause any freezing on the roads. we'll monitor those temperatures throughout the evening and be back at 11:00 and take another look at that. the clouds starting to thicken up. and here comes the precipitati

glenn "hurricane" schwartz is keeping an eye on the timeline. >> we issued the first alert on mondaygid air that's going to be coming over our area for the next couple of days, that arctic air we told you about for more than a week, and it is coming in, there's nothing to stop it. there's a question about the details, just how cold, just how long it will last. it's 41 in philadelphia now, 45 in allentown, 40 in wilmington. it feels like 18 in pittsburgh. that area is headed toward us for tonight. and this way below zero air is headed in our direction generally for tomorrow night. we don't get it as bad as those areas to the west. but we get at least some of it. here's the way it's going to feel, tomorrow morning, feeling like about 5, feeling close to zero or a little below late tomorrow evening. by friday morning, single digits, by friday afternoon, we're kind of out of that, then we have a different issue, snow. the clouds have moved in right now, a couple of little flakes in ohio, and there could be something that moves across parts of delaware and extreme south jersey, this is th

first alert glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here with our thursday forecast. >> yeah, quite a change from what we have seen over the last couple of days. temperatures still a little bit above average for the beginning of december but way below where we have been. 53 in philadelphia. we have some parts of the area not in the 50 degrees. there is more cloud cover and delaware 56. we are talking about low 70s yesterday. wind gusts 25 to 30 miles per hour. wilmington gusting to 28. we'll see some gusts over 30 miles per hour today. tuesday and wednesday 60 plus. today's official high will be 63 occurred shortly after midnight. the next couple of days pretty close to the average of 50 degrees for this time of the year. so as we go through the night tonight a little bit of a breeze. temperatures dropping to kind of typical levels for early december. it is 38 degrees in burkes county and lehigh valley. by 10:00 tonight getting closer to the freezing mark by morning. as you can see we have clearing skies as we go through the night tonight. we'll see if that lasts thro

glenn "hurricane" schwartz is tracking the conditions right now. >> the people that were supposed to get the snow got the snow, the people that were expecting the rain got the rain. and now we're getting the wind. and the wind is bringing in the colder air. it's a 45 in philadelphia now, that's as high as it's been all day. 40 in allentown, that's their highest. that's quite a change from a couple of days ago. the rain from earlier, that has all moved out, we have some snow flurries in central pennsylvania trying to make its way over the mountains, could hit parts of berks county and the poconos this evening. but we have a lot of cold air coming in over the next 24 hours and a lot of gusty winds. the temperature itself is not going to be plunging, exactly by 6:00 a.m. the wind is going to be picking up, gusting over 15 miles an hour at the time. diving near the freezing mark, in the lehigh valley, it's clearing skies, but we have gusts up to 40 miles an hour during the afternoon tomorrow. we'll see what that means for the weekend weather and a round of some pretty heavy rain too. tha

. >> let's begin with first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz with more about the arctic air tomorrow. >> it's the arctic air that set us up for the weekend. we have artic air right now, it extends all the way back through the northern states, thursday into friday, at least a part of friday before things ease up. let's look at the temperatures now, 38 degrees in philadelphia, already down to 32 in allentown, 34 in coatesville, it's the way it feels, but we look to the west, and it feels colder that. in pittsburgh, that 14-degree air headed our way for tomorrow morning. feels like 18 in chicago. below zero in chicago. we're not going to get the full brunt of that, but we're certainly going to get a good chunk of it and you're going to feel it by the time you get out tomorrow morning. it feels like 32 now, by the time you get to tomorrow morning, it's going to feel like closer to 5. by late in the day or the evening, it's going to feel like zero, maybe even below zero in some spots, maybe even friday morning it's going to be bitter cold, by friday afternoon, things s

nbc10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here now with a look at what you can expect in your neighborhood. >> we're bringing in colder air with these westerly winds, it was, remember, mid 60s, record breaking warmth yesterday, but by tomorrow morning, it's going to be snowing in parts of the area, lehigh valley, berks county, that's the place that's going to get the most hours of it. and the worst hours of it, right adventuri during the morning rush. from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. it's going to warm up and turn to rain after that. little busts of snow could slow down that morning rush and it could stick to some untreated surfaces like driveways and sidewalks and make things slippery early in the morning. this is rain increasing indiana, combining with that snow from wisconsin and we do expect the cold rain in philadelphia, 5:00 a.m., warming up by 9:00 a.m., it's still raining, it's going to be a wet morning across the entire area. in the suburbs, it's barely above freezing at 5:00 a.m., and then continues to warm up. lehigh valley, it's below freezing to sta

nbc 10 chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz will look at weather that will vary depending on where you live, of course. >> jim, the poconos got snow this morning, i think perhaps they'll get more snow tomorrow than they got today. we have fairly clear skies here after an early wet start in philadelphia. most of the area just had rain. it's 48 degrees in philadelphia now. 42 in allentown. there was a little bit of snow there. temperatures stayed above freezing, so it just melted. we're down to 37 degrees in vineland, 38 in mount holly, so a chilly night. the skies are clear now. here comes the moisture coming up from the south. there's a good bit of it, as you can see. and it is going to be moving in during the day tomorrow, not during the morning rush, though. it will be cloudy by noontime. the rain will be in much of delaware and parts of cape may county. but it's going to take until at least early afternoon to get across much of the rest of the area. and by the afternoon rush tomorrow, it's raining everywhere except for the poconos which could be getting some decent snowfla
