leading off our discussion tonight is democratic congressman glenn ivey of maryland, a member of the house ethics committee and a former federal prosecutor. congressman ivey, thank you very much for joining us tonight. i want to thank you again for joining us prior to the release of this report to talk about what was happening in the ethics committee, with the ethics committee in the extremely limited ways you were allowed to do that. you did it masterfully at the time i have to say, but i'm glad we can now have a freer discussion of this evidence. for you, especially as a federal prosecutor, what was the most critical evidence that you saw in this investigation? >> well, quite a bit of it. i think the staff did an outstanding job, as they always do, of pulling evidence together for us. the testimony that you just referenced a moment ago was very powerful. there was also, you know, text information that was exchanged between some of these witnesses, among themselves and with mr. gaetz. there was also financial records that corroborated what they'd said as well. so we had a range of in

joining our discussion now is congressman glenn ivey of maryland, he is a member of the house ethics udiciary committee, also a former federal prosecutor. congressman ivey, thank you so much for joining us tonight. i know you had a private meeting of the committee today and you can't tell us exactly what went on, there. but, one question i have about the evidence that the committee heard, was there contradictory evidence in the committee over points like what we were just hearing about? >> yeah, i can't really get into those kinds of details. you know, we put a statement out after the meeting that we had, where we talked about the fact that we had had discussions and they are ongoing. we also had two votes on the house floor today, with respect to resolutions that two house democrats have brought to compel production of the report to the public. the republicans brought up two motions, amendments, basically, that ended up killing those motions. so, basically, there were two votes, but the house floor didn't vote to release the report overall. it is basically a partyline vote, but we wi

joining me now is democratic representative glenn ivey of maryland. he currently sits on that house ethics committee and was previously a state and federal prosecutor. congressman, so good to have you this morning. thanks for the time. >> thanks for having me. >> so what do you make of what you just heard from your your colleague there of the fact that the committee only released the report only after gaetz was no longer in the running for a cabinet position? >> well, i think, you know, there was certainly a strong interest in releasing it so that the senate could hear it, uh, in the event he'd had confirmation hearings and they would have had to vote on whether he would be the attorney general or not. >> uh, after he stepped away from that, i thought it was important for the public to get the information. in any event, i think, you know, the serious nature of the findings here really justifies that. and it's also important for the house members who are still going to be sitting to know what, uh, what he did and what's over the line and what's not. >>

democrat glenn ivey, a member of the committee, voted to release the report. >> we're releasing it allnd the public can draw its own conclusions. specifically the committee pointed to a 2017 encounter gaetz had with a woman who testified she had just finished her junior year in high school and was only 17 when she and gaetz had sex twice at a party. gaetz has repeatedly denied having sex with anyone underage. and the woman said she did not tell gaetz that she was 17. the committee also detailed $90,000 in payments to 12 different women that investigators concluded was used to pay for sex and illicit drugs. while women testified the encounters were consensual, one witness testified that "when i look back on certain moments i feel violated." gaetz has admitted to womanizing and drinking and smoking during his younger years but says his conduct was embarrassing but not criminal. but despite gaetz's defense the committee believes there could be enough evidence that gaetz violated state laws. >> i would think that they would give strong consideration to investigating the allegations. >> rep

just after the house passed the bill, we spoke to congressman glenn ivey.m maryland. yeah, we were pretty pleased with the bill and the way it went forward. we liked the original bipartisan bill. this had most of what was in the original bill to start with. we were also pretty pleased with the ability to beat back donald trump's push, essentially to put a blank cheque in here somewhere in the range of $4 trillion dollars for him to spend when he came into office. we didn't think that was appropriate. and this why so many republicans voted with us yesterday to block that version. but the one that came through didn't have that provision and so we've got the government staying open, we've got many of the provisions we wanted to provide assistance to americans, especially the disaster relief provisions to help people that suffered from floods and tornadoes and the like and the farm bill too is an important provision to include. so, i think was a good provision for us all. stephanie lai is a white house reporter for bloomberg — i spoke to her about the feeling o

well congressman glenn ivey predicts it's going to give trump some fuel for his attacks against his enemies this is going to be used against us when we're fighting the misuses that are coming from the trump administration. i mean, he's not wrong about how it's going to be used. i mean, trump is already on the offensive. he's calling the pardon a quote, miscarriage of justice. that's pretty interesting because that's the same language joe biden used in his statement announcing the pardon. he says that hunter was unfairly prosecuted and that type of federal tax and gun charges that he was always facing are almost never brought to trial. now, trump himself has given his own controversial pardons. he's also made it clear he wants to take a sledgehammer to the justice department, and has suggested pardoning january 6th. defendants all by the way, long before this, hunter biden pardon. so is it really the precedent? democrats are worried about? i mean, cnn is hearing from multiple sources tonight and officials who worked for joe biden that they never actually believed a pardon was off the table.
