we are talking with the states attorney mccarthy and glenn ivy who co-wrote an opinion piece in the washingtont and offered their own set of recommendations for reducing gun violence in the nation. glenn, you say the approach has to be comprehensive. we will talk more about your recommendations, but you think that's the crux of the issue when it comes to succeeding in this effort? >> i do. i think a lot of the proposals we are talking about focus on particular aspects of gun violence, and assault weapons bans and the like, and even though homicides are dropping natalie and violent crimes are dropping nationally, you still need an apropose that will try to head it off at the pass. >> john, there are many who are very concerned that toughening gun laws will whittle down, water down and lessen their second amendment rights, and what do you think about those worried about preserving those rights? >> i think many of the common sense approaches that are being suggested not only by glenn and i and others, i don't think anybody is attempting to destroy the protections people have under the second amen
