times and former federal prosecutor and my chief legal explain, or glenn kirschner. so glenn, of course i'm going to be a forest. we are stuck with us abc news reporting about meadows. what does immunity and a case like this main? how big of a deal is it? >> you know, i think it's an important development, staff, but i am a little concerned. here's why. when a witness has incriminating evidence that prosecutors want, there are a few different ways to extract that incriminating information out of a guy like mark meadows. what way is you can subpoena him to the grand jury and ask nicely, would you please testify about it? but i got like mark meadows, apparently, has a fifth amendment right against self incrimination which he will invoke. so that's not an affective way to get out of him. the preferred way to get information out of a car like mark meadows, who remember, was burning lots of documents in his fireplace, presumably not for the warmth, those documents generated. it feels like it was up to no good. a guy like that, you would want to charge him with his crimes,

joining us now is glenn kirschner a former federal prosecutor.yst and host of the "justice matters" podcast. good to see you, special counsel jack smith requested the gag order to quote, protect the integrity of the trial and the jury pool. what will this mean for the trial? >> well, it won't mean much for the trial, but it may mean a lot for donald trump pending trial, jose. that is in the run up to trial because the judge has reimposed a gag order, a gag order interestingly that he would have violated had she kept it in place. donald trump took advantage of the stay of the pause to basically attack the witnesses, and she cited that in her decision to reimpose the gag order. the way it impacts donald trump is if he continues to violate it, judge chutkan will have the legal opportunity to what we call step him back, revoke him on pretrial release and detain him pending trial. so really in a sense, jose, the keys to the jail cell are in donald trump's hand. comply with the gag order, you won't be sanctioned, and you will not be jailed pending tria

glenn kirschner is back with me, also joining the conversation now, colorado secondary of state janetd. she also serves as the chair of the democratic association of secretaries of states -- grew to have you both with us. let me, secretary griswold, start with you, with this breaking news that we had just an hour ago or so, the reinstatement of the guy corridor on donald trump in this federal election interference case. just your initial thoughts on it. >> i don't think it should be surprising to anyone. donald trump is a liar who thinks it's okay to break the law and intimidate people who try to hold him accountable. like molly said in the previous segment, he has used inciting words and actions to lead to threats to his political opponents, legal opponents, anybody who he thinks is a danger to him. so ultimately, i think it's good to protect witnesses and the courts. there's a lot of litigation all over the country, and we cannot allow donald trump to use threats or intimidation as a way to get out of accountability. >> let me go back, glenn, to, at the quarter of this, something th

let's bring in msnbc legal analyst glenn kirschner back with us and first amendment scholar andersons. let me come to you first on what is perhaps one of the most striking contrasts between special counsel jack smith's paper, the things he produces in filings. and if you look just to the mueller period, these filings are rooted in moment to moment changes in the landscape where they resolve around threats of violence. and i wonder if you can speak to two things. one, does that inintersect with the federal government's assessment of the kurmt threat environment and their intersectionality with grievances about the 2020 election and 2024 election and trump's trials. and are they amplified by real concerns about witness tampering? >> yeah, i think, you know, jack smith has been very forward leaning, very direct direct. i wouldn't say hyperbolic but he has pulled no punches in his court filings, and i was kind of happy to see that when you get about 10 or 11 pages into this most recent filing where he is arguing hard in favor of why judge chutkan should lift the temporary stay chat she p

and glenn kirschner, former federal prosecutor and host of the justice matters podcast. today was a bit dramatic, there was a $10,000 fine, and there was also admonishment of trump. tell us about what happened? >> yeah, it was pretty dramatic. it was quite a day, and it's been building for a little bit. donald trump has really zeroed in on both the judge, but in this case, more his clerk, and this is somebody who sits at the bench with donald trump, and the judge confers with. we have seen in the last few weeks ago there was an incident where donald trump posted a picture with this clerk where chuck schumer called her chuck schumer's girlfriend, this really angered the judge, and trump was hit by the judge for that. he was criticized for it, and he was told to take the picture down. he did, but it surfaced that there was still a version of it on the internet and he got fined $5,000. and so then we walk into court this morning, and right away, it was interesting and you can just tell that this clerk has on their mind, donald trump's lawyer gets up, first thing in the morn

. >> joyce, i had glenn kirschner on my show this weekend and we were joking a litt bit about how whenthe reason i bring this up is there is the footnote in jack smith's filing on page 14 for those at home who follow along and that talks about this firearm purchase. purported purchase, did it really happen? we said it, we bought it, we didn't really buy it. words can be harmful. they can result in actual physical harm. the purchase of a firearm in violation of bond conditions as well as in violation of federal statutes is something a little more serious. do you think it's worthwhile for judge chutkan to actually have an evidentiary hearing on this allegation raised by jack smith's counsel here or jack smith about this purchase of the firearm? >> right, so it's very interesting, katie, because committing a new federal crime is in fact a violation of his conditions of bond. so what the judge might do here, where i think, would depend on someone making a motion, probably the probation office saying he's violated his bond and that it should be revoked or prosecutors could make that motion.
