joining me now glenn kirschner, former federal prosecutor, and legal analyst. they say to that? >> they will present the evidence, which is extremely powerful, chris. the defendant had a couple of ways to go here. he could have claimed he was not competent to stand trial, he was suffering from some sort of a mental problem, a psychiatric deficiency that made him not competent to stand trial. he didn't go that route. he could have gone insanity, a defense where you're competent to stand trial but basically you can't tell right from wrong or conform your conduct to the requirements of the law. he's going neither of those two routes. his lawyers said, and this is quote from her opening statement. the defendant fell prey to the disinformation ecosystem. that's not a defense, and the other thing that they're trying to do is they're trying to claim that he wasn't motivated to commit these crimes because he wanted to commit a crime against a federal official or a family member of a federal official but it was just because he kind of was upset with the conspiracies tha

. >> i want to bring in glenn kirschner, former federal prosecutor and msnbc analyst.sessment of what prosecutors have accomplished so far through eric and don jr.'s testimony? >> on the one hand, chris, it's a bit of a curiosity why they're testifying. eric, of course, pleaded the fifth. he invoked his fifth amendment right during the deposition and now choosing to testify. this follows, you know, after his brother don jr. testified in what at times, you know, sounds like it was almost comical. he was saying that he really didn't know what documents he was signing with respect to the sort of financial statements of the trump organization, and yet, he was the certifying official signing off on those documents as being accurate. of course he tried to blame everything on the accountants. he said we pay good money for accountants, so we really didn't pay attention to those details. the problem with that allegation or that assertion, chris, is that the accountants rely on trump and don jr. and eric to provide the information to them about, for example, you know, how big th
