nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz here with the forecast. glenn? >> we have a rainy day today, temperatures are milder but we have a first alert for tonight, especially late tonight and into tomorrow because things are going to change pretty rapidly while you're asleep tonight. that rain changing to snow and in many cases heavy snow. it is going to be snowing for the morning rush across much of the area. and possibly heavy snow during that period, leading to the biggest snowfall of the season. most likely 4.8 inches is the biggest in philadelphia so far and we have a very good chance of exceeding that. there is a winter storm warning for virtually the entire area except for the lehigh valley and poconos, which actually is going to get less snow than just about any other part of the area. there is the path now. just patchy light rain and there isn't a whole lot more coming. so it is not going to be a real wet few hours here. but look what is back to the west. not only heavier rain but this is the snow area. that's going to arrive right along that an

glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here now with our forecast. glenn? >> vai, we have issues of first alert for today. this afternoon, into this evening, because we have got a triple threat here. it is relatively brief snowfall. that's not the biggest problem. accumulating sleet. those are the frozen rain drops that bounce when they hit the ground and also some freezing rain in parts of the area. it is all going to impact the evening rush today. here is the storm right now. the storm is in the blue the darker blue is the heavier snow. the leading edge already starting to get into berks county. it is back to the west and it is moving right into this direction. it is going to start as snow. temperatures are below freezing. the ground is being cold. so any untreated surfaces that snow is going to stick when it comes in here. it is not even above freezing in southern parts of our area. here is the general timing 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. the snow starts. in general, across the area not every place. but 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. that's when we're getting the changeover to s

glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here with the forecast and an explanation. glenn? >> vai, especially here in the pocono mountains, it is going to be looking like winter this afternoon and evening. this is french manor. it is cloudy. but it won't be too much longer before there is some snow moving in. look at this area of snow moving right toward the poconos, also toward the lehigh valley. berks county getting involved in that. not a huge storm, but there are parts of it where it is coming down at a pretty good clip and it would certainly be reducing visibility quite a bit if anybody is driving up in that direction. very little down toward the south and east. certainly too warm for snow this afternoon and eventually we'll get some rain. 49 in philadelphia. only 44 in allentown. 35 in mount pocono. those temperatures of course are going to be dropping as soon as the snow starts to fall. and we're in the 50s farther to the south. so there is going to be a huge temperature contrast across the area. by 1:00 this afternoon, little mix of rain and snow in the allentown an

let's go back over to nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz with the very latest on this storm. glenn? >> yeah, keith. as we get closer and closer to the noon hour we're looking for any kind of signs of the storm moving out. haven't seen much. at least not yet. we have been monitoring city avenue here and the traffic is moving okay. heavily traveled roads that have been plowed over and over again seem to be passable like i-95 for example. but a lot of the other roads not very good shape. you look at the size of this area of snow. it is huge. and we have some darker blues, some heavier snow down by baltimore and washington. that's about to move up into new castle county. about to get your heaviest snow of the whole storm there. and the back edge of it not moving very much. and so that means hour after hour of more snow. fairly heavy burst in the philadelphia area now. and across the river into burlington county. lightening up in chester county put that isn't necessarily a permanent thing. there is another area of heavier snow up in lehigh valley berks county

nbc 10 first alert meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. this could mean snow and a few inches depending on where you are. >> depending on the surface. there could be more on the grass than on the roads by the end of the day. we're issuing a first alert for this kind of messy storm that we're going to be having here. slushy snow across a good bit of the area. it will affect the morning and the afternoon rush hours and the heaviest of that snow on the pennsylvania turnpike as you will see in just a second. it looks like it's just rain but as it moves into the cold air it will turn to snow. the timeline shows that it could start between 6:00 and 9:00 a.m. in much of the area especially toward the south and west and then it becomes heavier. it becomes slushy as we go through the rest of the morning. the peak of the storm might be right around the middle of the day and in some areas it will change over to rain in the afternoon, keeping the amounts down a little bit and it could possibly end in freezing rain in parts of the area. the general amo

let's head over to nbc10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. how much snow are we talking about? >> we're talking about ranges from about 2 inches to 9 inches in our forecast. and very unusual the 2 inches in the place that generally gets the most up in the poconos. also lehigh valley probably closer to 2 inches. then bigger amounts in places that don't generally get on the higher amounts. now to 10 p.m. we've got rain. some of it on the heavy side. you go to bed, it's wet. but in the middle of the night while you're sleeping the rain is changing to snow. you wake up oh there it is. snowy and colder right during what would be the morning rush. 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. changeover lehigh valley and poconos, 1 to 3 a.m. right across the philadelphia down toward chester county. the farther south you go the later it's going to change. but the longer the snow's going to last during the day. generally speaking 2 to 4 inches poconos and lehigh valley. 4 to 7 across much of philadelphia and chester counties. 6 to 9 inches, though, northern delaware in into a g

. >> nbc 10 first alert meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here. they got strong at times. >> we will be seeing it die down just within the next couple of hours and we have a decent wind out there at citizens bank park and it will be used less than a month from now for the home opener for the phillies. it's almost feeling like baseball weather we said yesterday. 51 in philadelphia now where it's only 44 in allentown and 36 in mt. pocono and still feeling like winter and especially when you factor in the wind and we're finally not seeing a gust in philadelphia and that is a sign the wind is already starting to go down. it's bone dry around here and the humidity incredibly low, but look down to the south and a lot of humidity down there and a lot of rain and some of that coming in our direction and obviously, not for the rest of the day and we'll be seeing these temperatures go down into the 20s overnight tonight and some places much lower than that. and i'll talk about how cold it will get and with the rain in the seven day in a few minutes. >> see

glenn schwartz has the forecast for us. >> if the temperatures drop a little bit, there's going to be more and more icing. you can see in the live picture outside the station, the road a little bit on the wet side. a couple of degrees colder, it's ice. in the parking lots there's snow and slush right now. and that's going to be slippery in the morning. the storm has pretty much moved out. certainly the snow. but we're left with little pockets of drizzle and with the temperature down below freezing in some places as you can see, that's freezing drizzle like in trenton and allentown, pottstown, just barely freezing so it's not widespread. but there are issues with that. as the storm ends we have that freezing drizzle in some parts of the area. patchy icing tonight. and we'll still have some icy spots until about 8:00 or so. as soon as that sun comes up things are really going to start melting. the amounts of snow got a lot to melt in parts of buck county. philly international, 3.9. we'll talk more about other snow totals and see what's in store. 60 degrees at least one day in the seven-

glenn "hurricane" schwartz has that and a first alert for the possibility of freezing rain this morning. >>> right. just for the next couple of hours we have that threat. there's precipitation and it's cold. that's not a great combination when dealing with the morning commute. visibility is fine over philadelphia now and precipitation is very light. and in many cases, not even reaching the ground because the low levels of the atmosphere are just so dry. but until 9:00 a.m. we do have the possibility of some light freezing rain. icing on some surfaces and the sun is going to melt everything. and it will cure all our problems in a few hours. from philadelphia northward to the area possible with icing until 9:00 a.m. and on the radar, we're seeing more and more of the green, which is just the regular rain. and we have the pink which is the icing. so that's helpful. and temperatures creep up a little bit. you can see some of the rain not reaching the ground here but the low levels of the atmosphere are dry. and these are the actual reports from the major reports. the only place reporting an

. >> let's start with nbc 10 chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> we were telling you the snow is going to last all day and it is. we just have a few hours left in the daytime hours, right? so the storm is about over. everything re-freezes tonight, though, and record cold. that's the latest on this storm. you can see the dry air coming in from the southwest. we also have dry air coming in from the northwest so this area is getting eaten away. as soon as the snow stops, that's it coming from the west and brooks county and look at the heavy band right through the i-95 area and getting pounded, and southern bucks conte getting pounded and the heaviest of all, southern delaware up to extreme southern new jersey. cape may called me up and it hadn't snowed all day and says it looks like a blizzard now. huffs church close to 10 inches. devon, 9, coatesville 8, and drexel hill 6.8. in new jersey 6.7 in mount laurel and 6.5 in bordentown and 6.1 in youing and 6 inches in mantua and in delaware 4 to 5 inches and new castle county far less farther to the south and they're getting hid

let's head over to chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz with the snow totals where you live. >> as we've been saying of course, it depends on how much of this is rain. how much is sleet. how much is snow. that will determine how much snow you're going to get. the change overcomes first in lehigh valley 1 a.m. to 3 p.m. appear chester county a little later, 3 a.m., 5 a.m. more hours of the day we'll see snow in the southern areas. starts later. it's going to end later. now let's talk about the specifics. how much snow in 2 to 4 inches upper bucks county through the lehigh valley, poconos area. they normally get the most. probably going to get the least. much of berks county also in the 2 to 4. 4 to 7, philadelphia delaware county chester county lower bucks and montgomery mercer county upper portion of burlington county. and 6 to 9 inches, perhaps the highest amounts, in parts of northern dell and in through a good bit of south jersey. then a little lower amounts far south. that's still a significant amount. just some specifics on towns in the 6 to 9 area. middletown delaware.

nbc10 chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz joining us now. >> glenn, many parts of the region are also seeing rain. in some areas, that could turn to snow? >> yeah. it's getting very close to changing in parts of the lehigh valley. right now it's been snowing for hours in the pocono mountains. another shot at blue mountain where it continues to snow. it is starting to accumulate on at least the tables there. and on the slopes. you can see the rain area moving through your region. the snow area is actually shrinking now as this storm seems to be weakening over the last hour or so. there's a little bit heavier rain back to the west that may be coming in over the next couple hours. in the meantime the rain/snow line has come down to the allentown area right now. it continues to snow in the poconos and the lehigh valley. getting into the action now, too. it's down to 36 degrees there. only 38 in pottstown while it's 50 in philadelphia. and 64 in georgetown delleaware. how about that? almost a 30-degree contrast not including the mountains. auto 50 degrees with showers right now an

nbc10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz says it's going to drop below the freezing mark today. really, glenn? >> yeah. just about everybody will be in the 20s tonight. if we didn't have the clouds moving toward us some places would be in the teens. bright and blue out there in the poconos. of course, where it's the coldest of all. this is big bear. the ski conditions are pretty decent and will be as we head to the weekend. it's going to be a cold weekend here. 39 degrees in allentown. 40 in trenton and mt. holly and pottstown. lancaster as well. this is the area of clouds coming in that produced significant snow in chicago earlier today. but the whole thing is weakening. we're just going to see the clouds from that and that's going to prevent the temperature from dropping even more than it is. it's dropping low enough down near the freezing point by 10:00 in philadelphia and, of course below freezing elsewhere. that means a refreeze of whatever melted during the day today. we'll see how much warmer it gets this week and when more rain is coming. we'll have the seven

nbc10 chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is back now. >> you are watching the storm as it starts to wind down. how much longer before this is out of here? >> it depends on where you are in our western suburbs. we're already seeing a significant change. that live shot you saw in kennett square it was hardly snowing at all. it's still snowing in south philly. i-95 just wet. we continue to monitor those main highways but we have a first alert out for highways beyond the big ones. to the smaller roads. bridges, overpasses sidewalks, driveways, slushy snow. and then a chance of freezing drizzle as we go through the night, creating some icy spots for early on saturday. you can see over the six-hour period, everything moving from west to east. in lancaster county it's almost over. berks county the western part of the county just about over. lehigh valley getting close to the end of it but we continue to see some of these dark colors in the blue. in burlington county down 295. also parts of ocean county getting some pretty heavy snow. totally different story to the west. chester c
