glenn schwartz says there's hail.also have reports of strong, windy conditions. >> things change quickly and move quickly. . we couldn't see anything about 15 minutes ago. and the skyline shot at center city has improved dramatically just over the last few minutes. so the core of that storm is certainly going through. we go back. we were showing you the conditions earlier that were favorable for the development of these thunderstorms and, boy, have they exploded. but over the last hour or so or less than an hour, they have weakened. there's less loiightning in thi than the heaviest over avenuing on to and the warwarrington are. now they were getting hit pretty hard a half hour ago. so that adds up. now this also kind of unusual. hail tracking in the south and going right into south philly. we showed you this a half hour ago. low and behold, there's actual hail that has been reported in south philly. this will continue moving up to the north and the amounts of rain with doppler estimates pretty significant. in just an

. >> let's go to chief meteorologist glenn schwartz with more on how weather played that important role. >> it was the intention to fly into bad weather so there's no surprise that there was bad weather at the time. now just how bad was it? there's not much on the radar. just a few sprinkles missed. the clouds are pretty low to the ground. reported about 500 feet above the ground. so you had that much room to play with. visibility was two and a half miles in that period between 10 and 1:001:00 in the morning. tvs even lower earlier in the morning. the reported visibilities at 11:00 a.m. the airport at 4 miles. philadelphia had 8 mile visibility. so these are conditions that helicopters have managed to fly in in the past. it's not exactly ideal weather. but the intention was to fly in bad weather. and that's what they got. the weather was worse. and let's say at 8:00 in the morning than it was at 10:00. it was gradually improving. the visibility was going up a little bit each hour. the cloud deck was not going any kig zig cantly different amounts as we went through 10:00 in the morning.

let's bring in meteorologist glenn schwartz. a lot cooler than normal too. >> way cooler than normal. the average high is 78. this is as high as we have been all in philadelphia at 62 degrees. not any warmer anywhere else. we have some places in the suburbs that haven't even gotten to 60 all day. clouds across the entire region. now you combine all the clouds with that persistent east wind, the east wind helps keep the clouds in, the shore, a a miserable place today. holgate at 59, stone harbor, cape may point at 60. ocean temperature, 61. not only that, but there's rain as you'll see in a minute. so here's the highs. the average 78. 64 yesterday. 62 today. look at tomorrow. we jump up 17 degrees. near normal thursday with sunshine. remember that? and 82 degrees on friday. so some huge changes ahead. there's that last rain coming across cape may county. it's fairly dry across much of the rest of the area. but with do have the one heavy shower there right over avalon. the back edge of this continues to move to the east. and so we

glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here with a look at your forecast, glenn. >> yeah. i believe they will be able to play this afternoon. we have kind of a weird picture here. this is east in pennsylvania. we have a lot of clouds. cloud cover throughout the area. you can see that we are still seeing some of that rain up into the lehigh valley. nothing more than a couple of drizzle drops farther to the south. we have storm ranger 10 out in burlington county tracking that rain that came in early this morning. we are going to send it to where the storms are going go this afternoon so we'll be able to get real close to those storms and potentially the strongest storms. not much ton radar now as you can see. we are also seeing a little bit of drying down to the south here. we are going to be watching for that later and this line of showers potentially developing into thunderstorms later on today. as we go hour by hour not much going on this afternoon. they will be able to play ball. they will be able to go outside and might even be peeks of sunshine especially south jersey.

let's bring in chief meteorologist glenn schwartz. >> what's the timing of these showers right now?k like over the next few hours, these showers as they move closer to the lehigh valley and poconos going to weaken. they have been weakening as they have gotten farther to the east. these are the only showers in our area very small. other showers moving to the east could affect the lehigh valley and the poconos. but a lot of this stuff isxl ju going to weaken as the sun goes down. as you can see on the futurecast, there's 8:00. there's not much going on, but later on this evening, for the lehigh valley, poconos area, maybe extending to parts of bucks county and then we start out again. no repeat of the fog from this morning tomorrow morning. it's going to be a really nice start to the day. 78 degrees, that's exactly the average high for this time of year. but it's still in the 60s to near 70 at the beaches. we have that chance of a a shower or thunderstorm by late this evening. again, the highest chance is farther to the north. tomorrow morning, starting off sunny. we're going to finis

. >> glenn schwartz is tracking the return of rain later toni t tonight. not everyone will see it, which is why neighborhood weather is so important. >> the further south, the better chance you have of seeing the rain. everybody has the clouds up in easton. and the rain is pretty patchy. a a lot of this not reaching the ground yet. but farther to the south, it certainly is. it's a pretty significant area in virginia and this in north caroli carolina. the highest resolution future weather model showing that rain moving into delaware and south jersey by 9:00 tonight. having a hard time coming through the area. we may see some of that rain anywhere in the area during the night by the time we get to the morning rush and if there's anything in the heavier area, it would be in delaware and south jersey during at least a portion of the morning rush. now it's unseasonably chilly again today with the rain and clouds. there's the rain at 6:00 a.m. right for the morning rush. it's going to be on the cool side. we're not expecting heavy rain with this particular syste

wet weather this week and we'll find out what's to come with nbc 10 chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. glenn? >> yeah, tracy, we do have more rain and some places will get hit harder especially delaware and in south jersey. this is what we're seeing now. south jersey and the philadelphia area getting hit pretty hard, but there is another area down by washington that's coming straight up at us and even if the rain tapers off a little bit, it is going to be increasing and getting heavier. we do have one fairly heavy area right over philadelphia itself. right now that is moving to the northeast as you just saw head the toward northeast philly, so it will taper off for a while, but you saw that other area that is coming in. we've also had more rain in this area right to mays landing to other areas. some of these places have already seen over an inch and there will be localized flooding in that area, but to the north and west of that area and a lot of pennsylvania counties much lighter rain. we'll have fewer hours of rain. it's still not a pretty day, but it's not as nasty as what we're go

first with meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz with the most steamy forecast. >> only steamy a couple hours longer. we are getting a drastically different weekend than what we have seen today. there is no way, nowhere near 90, even near 80 over the weekend. we may not even be up to 70. it's 93 degrees in philadelphia right now. 90 in redding. 91 in lancaster. 90 in trenton. 93 atlantic city. international inland, 78 at the marina. got into 90 at the beaches today before the sea breeze kicked in. so we 93 again, three days in a row. 90-plus makes it an official heat wave. look what comes over the weekend. a 25-degree temperature drop, and at the shore it will be more like a 35-degree temperature drop. now, we do have showers, even a couple of lightning bolts here on the radar. generally headed towards delaware, and extreme south jersey. this area about to hit the northern portion of the chesapeake bay and this is the timing. middletown, before 5:00, 5:40 in dover. 5:46 in denton if that line keeps together. these isolated ones that have just developed are starting to move straight to t

improve before people head home later today. >> nbc 10's first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartzhe forecast. glenn? >> it's not exactly going to be a great beach day this arc afternoon, but it will be improving in philadelphia where we have rain right now. you can see the drops on the lens here and the flag's blowing and the wind is coming in off the ocean, but this is the last batch of the rain. you can see it's dry back to the west and we don't anticipate any more developing. so it was right over philadelphia and now it's moved into new jersey. so the progression continues. we've been telling you since last week that the best part of memorial day is going to be in the -- toward the end of the day and we're still expecting that, and maybe a little bit of sunshine in parts of southern delaware and extreme south jersey, but there's still a lot of clouds around and once the rain goes out, at least things will improve a little bit. you can see on the futurecast, some of that sunshine developing later on during the afternoon. we'll see how the rest of the week's shaping up coming up.

chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz has the most accurate weather. >> some places got a lot more rain than other. you can see the low clouds cutting off the tops of building. it looked a lot worse than this this morning as the rain came through philadelphia itself. we had more rain in delaware and in new jersey than in our pennsylvania county and the heaviest of the rain now has just moved off shore so it's just off shore from atlantic city down to cape may, a little bit heavier around long beach island. that's just round one. there's more rain, a lot more rain down across the southern states as you can see moving in our general direction. it's not going to rain all the time this week but it's going to rain a lot more this week than just today. and this is the area that had the most. from dover, delaware, about an inch of rain estimated by radar to an inch and a half around vineland, buena vista had reports of 2 1/2 to 3 inches that was the highest amount that we've gotten and up to an 1 1/2 around toms river. much less less farther to the north and west as far as accumulati

glenn "hurricane" schwartz has the details on that, glenn. >> yeah. despite all of the cloud cover we are not going to get any rain this afternoon or this evening but we will be getting it by tomorrow morning. we have overcast skies across a good bit of the area. a few peeks of sunshine especially in some of the northern suburbs. allentown is warmer than philadelphia. it is 66 degrees. we continue to see the northeast wind. the entire area in the 60s. we had some rain overnight. a few leftover showers and things are pretty dry but not for long. we have thicker clouds getting ready to move in and there's the rain. in eastern kentucky moving our direction. it looks like it will time out to get here by the morning rush tomorrow but not by this evening. we are dry this afternoon. maybe a few peeks of sunshine. the rain comes in late. it comes across the entire area by morning. some of it on the heavier side especially between 4:00 and 6:00 a.m. that is when we expect the heaviest of the rain. this evening you can see the cloudy skies until well after midn

our chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz joins us. >> what can we expect? >> especially over delaware bay and into the cape may area and louis delaware, the area likely to get hit by this storm. it's fairly isolated. you see pennsylvania is dry. much of new jersey is dry. this is the one area that we predicted yesterday was most likely to see that rain. that was in the neighborhood forecast for delaware, where parts of pennsylvania had no rain in the forecast. that's what the neighborhood forecast is about. this storm has just gone past dover and is now in delaware bay, and the water temperature there is in the 50s. so the 90-degree temperatures that helped fuel the storms are not there in the bay. so this very well may weaken as it heads towards the delaware beaches and cape may, just towards 7:00. about 6:40 in milford. 6:23. there was hail with this as it came through portions of maryland, and then into delaware, and we can see that -- this area had -- the blue is indicating a half inch to one inch diameter hail. right off -- branch road in delaware. so

glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> we know last summer's heat was intense.an we expect more of that next summer? >> some people like it hot and dry. others like it cool and damp. but you want to save on electricity and the lawn stay greener? the weather this summer just might help. not many of these last summer. it was very dry overall. a drought in the spring and then it was drier than normal here every month from june to september. that's often the case in dry summers, also hot. real hot. in july and august, more than half of the days at least 90 degrees. and we had unusually long heat waves in both july and august. hot, dry summers often lead to the best weather at the shore and we had a lot of great weather weekends last summer. great for business, too. and not this time. instead of 46 days of 90 degrees or higher last summer, 30 to 40 of them this summer. that's still above normal, though. the hottest month compared to normal? august. same as last year. rainfall more than four inches below normal last summer. this summer, two inches above normal. the we
