joining me now is glenn thrush. in washington, peter nicholas. here in new york, amy chozick at the new york times. i am pleased to have them here as we talk about the democratic race. what is going on? how do we evaluate the sanders surge? amy: the clinton people have said they expected poles to narrow but you have seen a jarring strategic change. she went from barely mentioning bernie sanders to hitting him hard. every signal is they are nervous. they could lose iowa and new hampshire and that could send a ripple effect of losing donors and having to scramble. she could still capture the nomination but they are bracing for that. charlie: does it make her up amy: there are a couple of schools of thought for the establishment would stick with her. i don't think people necessarily think they would get behind bernie sanders the way they did with barack obama. guest: the thing would look for, the back-to-back defeats in iowa and new hampshire. there is a large african-american vote that is typically loyal to her but defeats and i'll and new hampshir

president obama gave an interview to politico's glenn thrush thought he not so subtly was pushing clintonwhat did he have to say? >> he sure did. just the image of senator sanders standing in the west wing of the white house was a sight to behold for his supporters. he was asked if he asked the president for an endorsement. he said no, he did not. senator sanders said he also thought the president had been treating him fairly. >> some discussion the other day about a political interview where he was tipping the scale toward secretary clinton, i don't believe that at all. i think he and the vice president have tried to be fair and even-handed in the process and i expect they will continue to be that. >> reporter: so i think that is just a bit of optimism there from senator sanders. if you talk to his advisers, they believe privately of course the president and more importantly a lot of the people in his administration are siding more with secretary clinton. not a surprise. she of course was a member of the administration. but voters here in iowa, jake, as well as other states are going to

before in a debate, where she was praising this recent interview obama did with politico reporter glenn thrushg this, take a listen. >> he says also in there, you get undue criticism. and he says, by the way, i have some regrets about my campaign. and some of the things we did. was that surprising? >> yes, that was surprising. you know, i really appreciated him saying that because he'd said he had that great line which i love. i think he said something like, you know, she had to do -- he said i was like fred astaire and she had to do everything i had to do only she was ginger rogers doing it backwards in high heels. and i thought that was a really -- a very sweet remark. >> it was a great quote from the president, but also on the flip side, president obama, through this interview, you know, critiqued hillary clinton saying she's better in smaller groups. agreed her first campaign -- again, this was many years ago, at the time, she was rusty. do you think now she is truly firing people up? >> oh, i think she's capable of it and we saw it yesterday. there's some days when she does not. but when

administration needs to protect their legacy, we saw last week that obama gave an interview with glenn thrushe all but endorsed her, and didn't hurt national security. i don't know if this is a step that they know an indictment isn't coming. >> what if the intelligence community is able to prove that because she was hacked and pretty much everybody knows she was hacked, if she was hacked, agents in the field died. does that change it? >> absolutely. i think she's already got the specter of benghazi hanging over her. and for a secretary of state to behave so recklessly and she said she knew the difference between a classified and a nonclassified e-mail, she can identify that. she said it's not marked classified so it's not my fault. she's a pro at blaming other people and even democratic voters are growing tired of it. that's why they're feeling the bern. >> they are feeling the bern, according to the latest des moines register poll, where they're neck and neck. jessica, the final word? >> i think that hillary clinton should have owned up to this being a mistake from the get go. i don't like t
