glenn youngkin, thank you very much.you think you pulled off what i think anyone would agree was an amazing feat last night? >> tucker, first of all, thank you for having me back. this campaign stopped being a campaign a while ago, and it became a movement, and yes, it all started in loudoun county many, many, many months ago. but parents across virginia started to recognize that they really didn't need to have an important, decisive role in ther children's education, and when they heard terry mcauliffe say exactly what you just played, that parents don't have a role in their kids education. he wants to put government between parents and their children. this ceased to be a campaign and started to be a movement led by parents. and while the kitchen table issues that are so important to all virginians, low taxes and safe communities and great jobs, continued to be very much front and center, education really did become a top issue in this election. >> tucker: but you took it come at one point, i was really struck by this,

so, yes, glenn youngkin was able to make inroads in the suburbs, but if you want to know where glenn youngkin made the biggest gains, and had the biggest edge, i want to compare this race to the race four years ago that was won by the democrat ralph northam. and i want to look at where terry mcauliffe under performed ralph northam, did significantly worse than the democrat four years ago. you can see the areas where terry mcauliffe did worse, primarily these red rural counties. not the suburbs here. you can see terry mcauliffe basically did right around or within the margin of error, as it were. there's no margin of error in this. right around what ralph northam did four years ago. his real devastating los angeleses c losses came in these counties. smith, there's only 10,000 votes. glenn youngkin won 82% of the vote. terry mcauliffe won 17% of the vote. that's not much. i want to compare that to four years ago. you see ralph northam had 42%. that's terrible. terry mcauliffe managed to do even worse. you can go county to county in these red rural areas to see those votes are just bleed

i think there is no question about it, glenn youngkin has won the campaign.irst of all, he has really determined the issues that they have fought this campaign on. especially education, especially the issues of teaching race in school, transgender policy. mask mandates. all of that. and also we can't overstate the self-inflicted wound from terry mcauliffe in that debate when he said i don't think parents should be telling schools what to teach. youngkin jumped on that. and has beaten it like a horse ever since then. youngkin also has been very effective in the way he has handled donald trump who is a net negative in the state of virginia. he has kept the die hard trump supporters while not tying himself too closely to trump. i would say that in the end, it feels, it feels like glenn youngkin is going to win this race and in the closing days he has had bigger crowds, more enthusiastic crowds, but then you get to the math, and things can change. we will see how the world turns tonight. >> bret: brit, that education issue really was a big turning point in the pa

while glenn youngkin did well, if you want to know where youngkin picked up the most ground over democrats in the last few years, i want to show you. i want to compare it to the last virginia governor's race, 2017. that was a race ralph northam became the governor. and i want to look at areas where terry mcauliffe underperformed ralph northam by more than five points. and look at this. it's not the suburban areas. terry mcauliffe basic live did about as well as ralph northam did four years ago in the suburban areas. where terry mcauliffe had a real problem was in the republican rural counties. how can that be? they are predominantly republican already. take a look at smith county. terry mcauliffe got just 17% of the vote. 16.9%. you are getting ever closer to zero if you're a democrat right there. if you want to compare it to what ralph northam did, i got 22%. not great but more than 17%. if you pop around the state and rural areas, county to count, look there. fray son county, glenn youngkin got 82%. glenn youngkin was able to hold his own in the areas around washington, d.c. and richmond
