we are on southbound 17 just south of glenwood drive where you can see a very large mudslide. at one point it was blocking both lanes. this happened around 8:25 this morning, and remarkably, no one driving in the southbound direction was harmed by this, no cars were hit by it. and since then, caltrans has carved out a little path on the left side of that mudslide to make way for emergency vehicles. but as far as us regular people, this road is going to be shut down for quite some time. i just spoke with chp. they tell us that caltrans doesn't want to do anything yet as far as removing this because they don't know if it's stable. once a geologist comes out and makes a determination, they'll come up with a plan of attack. the idea is this may be reopened by sometime tonight, but that's to be determined. once they do figure out when they're going to reopen, they'll determine whether they'll do a two-way direction on the northbound. northbound is open only for northbound traffic, but they might make a determination we'll make it two-way. again, the bottom line is if you're trying

this is glenwood drive. the road buckled because of all the rain and the santa cruz mountains in the past two weeks and some of the most scenic locations in santa cruz really have taken a beating in the storms, including parts of west cliff drive. parts of the drive collapsed after two weeks of relentless is rain, causing huge holes in the road. near the lighthouse field. state beach. about a mile of that road will be closed for the next few days. north bay commuters are dealing with a key closure in their morning drive. caltrans may be able to reopen it today. we're talking, of course about highway 37 near atherton avenue in nevada. a live look now at that roadway, which is closed due to flooding. there was more rain overnight here, so caltrans only to inspect the water levels on and near the freeway and highway actually before making a decision on how to clear it. caltrans says flooding on 37 started when nevada creek overflowed its banks. at least six pumps are being used to get the water off the road. ne

this slide mid-morning this morning near glenwood drive. it is blocking all of the southbound lanes. they do have crews in there trying to clear it out. it was there was a little debris in the northbound lanes to, but they managed to keep the northbound lanes open. the southbound lanes right now remain completely close. we've got a pretty good line of people backed up waiting here to see what happens next. i've talked to quite a few people there, including one man who works with apartment transportation. he was up all night trying to clear roadways was just trying to get home to santa cruz. >> i'm trying to get worked all night in san jose. a deal with floods of all nightthe rain and mudslides. now it's turn to go home. go to sleep in. come back tonight and again. >> all right. now, as for when the roadway might might reopen, we do not have time. we have heard just a while ago that it could be late this evening or potentially tomorrow morning. they just started to turn people around the pan over here. you can see these folks right back here

the hillside near glenwood drive collapsed and sent mud and debris onto the southbound lanes of 17. there was also some debris in one of the northbound lanes. crews have been in there trying to clean that up. but it is a big job. so they have closed down all the southbound lanes pretty much turned. everybody around was trying to get to santa cruz and sent them back. i did talk to a few people who are still here. they're trying to wait it out, but it could be a while. >> it will be. all right. all we should be able to, you know, throw it out. just have to have a lot of just taking that in my car. i you could go all the other backroads from what i hear is on all closed with the war sites. >> yeah, that is the other thing here is that if you're trying to get from san jose los gatos into santa cruz, you can't do it on 17. you've got to find somewhere else. and it's justin was mentioning a moment ago, 1, 0, 1, 9, the one all of the other routes around here are dealing with issues of flooding mudslides as well. so if you're trying to get through this area, check ahead, check traffic check

a slide of mud and trees that fell onto sonbong 17 completely blocking the roadway just south of glenwood drive. how soon do you think this will be cleaned up? i don't have an answer for that. right now. we're hoping by this evening, but that could change depending on what it looks like underneath. geologists are on their way out. and they say that this cannot be open tonight. do you think you will redirect traffic on the north side of highway 17? that is an issue that we're considering. um, we'll have to see how it goes. i really like to hear the geologist opinion first. how busy have you been since the onslaught of storms began december 27th very busy. we've got closures on a lot of different roadways. we've got officers going to all those and also trying to help individuals for normal cause as well. if you had one piece of advice to give everybody at home watching this, what would that be? i've got to one drive safely. the roads are wet. even if it's not actively raining. they're very slippery. the other one is if you don't need to go out right now, probably stay home. so can you imagi
