i'm gloria borger. it's this simple, if republicans won't put tax increases on the table, democrats won't agree to big spending cuts. until they figure out a way to get around that, there will be no deal. dana bash is cnn's senior congressional correspondent. dana, taxes and entitlements are the big issues here. both parties are refusing to budge. are we going to end up seeing a really big deal here? or in the end are they going to have to settle for something smaller in order to get this debt limit raised? >> that's a good question. at this point, you would think that as you say both sides are so dug in they might have to settle for something smaller. my understanding from sources i'm familiar with the talks that have been led by the vice president that have been going on for a month and a half, is that they actually had been doing pretty well when it comes to finding areas to cut spending, just a general blueprint, they found about $2.5 trillion, no small fete. but the republicans specifically they th

>> well, let me start with a proposition and i think gloria is right. one had a very distinct sense today that they are not making the kind of progress the country needs in these talks or he would not have taken the tone he did today. you don't go in -- if you're in a critical moment when you're trying to build trust, you don't go public and scold the other side and issue these snide insults about them. you're warmer, you're more constructi constructive. and i think the president seeing that things are not going well, if he can't make them see the light, make them feel the heat. the scolding i think will alienate the republicans. he's playing a double game here. he'll alienate the republicans in the beltway and i think it makes it harder to get a deal but it probably plays pretty well with the country. i think a lot of people will buy into some of the arguments he made today about the republicans. >> you know, david and gloria as well, but what's interesting is you're right. there was an edge to it. there was almost a snide quality in his comment about

with us cnn chief political analyst gloria borger and "time" magazine political columnist joe klein. joe, it's generally reported that president obama overruled general petraeus who wanted more troops left in afghanistan. is that true from your reporting? what can you tell us about how the president made his decision? >> well, it's interesting. this is the second time in i think three months that the president has overruled the military. he's becoming a very confident commander in chief. he did it with osama bin laden, secretary gates wanted to have him drop a bomb. obama wanted to do it with special forces. he got his way there, very successfully. in this case, once again, he wants to go with special forces. petraeus is the advocate of counterinsurgency strategy which means a long, slow process to win over the local population. the president determined that what was really working in afghanistan over the last 18 months have been these special operations that took out a lot of the mid level taliban leadership and also a lot of the top level al qaeda leadership. this option was within
