gloria's right. the economists say you're going to slow federal spending at a time the economy is weak, whoa, isn't that counterintuitive, don't you want more federal spending to help. political economics say cut spending now. just ten days or so ago, go back and find the president's radio address, he said it would not be fair, it would be unfair, his words, to sign a debt ceiling agreement that did not include some revenues coming from more wealthy americans. the president today will sign a debt ceiling agreement that does not guarantee any revenues coming from anybody. it could come from the super committee in the second round of this but they don't guarantee it. the president had to compromise here even though the democrats control the white house because republicans control the house and effectively have veto power in the united states senate because it's close enough. all of these debates will now carry over. this is going to quiet the debate in washington for 24, maybe 48 hours. the super commi

gloria borger, want to go to you. already that house speaker john boehner and the president of the united states have had some sort of conversation regarding this faa impasse and this problem proforma procedure what. are you learning on the senate side? >> well, actually we were -- we were saying that they were very optimistic, and just moments ago senator reid actually released a statement saying that they have been able to broker a bipartisan compromise between the house and the senate to cope those people from getting furloughed. it's interesting though, brooke. in the statement it says this agreement does not resolve the important differences that still remain, but i believe we should keep americans working while congress settles its differences, and this agreement will do exactly, that so as we suspected earlier they haven't resolved the larger issues of collective bargaining for airline workers or the question of the funding for the rural airports, but in the short term, probably because they all look terrible i

let's bring in gloria borger.kers of course seem to be holding their noses and voting for this plan. is this a good deal for anybody and how does it shape the political debate for the white house and congress moving forward? >> well, it's a deal that there is something in it for everyone to hate and everybody does hate something in it. because that's the essence of compromise and it was the only way to get to raising the debt ceiling which was the goal. but i think if you step back for a moment, marty, what we're seeing right now is a real shift in the political discussion from an era which we were involved in stimulus spending to get the economy moving to a real era of restraint on fiscal policy. and there are huge economic a s arguments being made whether at this point in the economy we should be shifting from restraint to spending. but the politicians understand that the political movement right now is towards restraint and that's the effect of the tea party movement that we've seen on the congress. so it reall

joining us now, gloria bolger. cornell belcher. and erick erickson.o much focus on the long-term spending problem. the debt ceiling fight. our problem right now is a weak economy, it seems like. >> you know, anderson, it's been frustrating for me, during some of the conversations on the debt ceiling during the past two weeks. journalists in washington focused on the stock market, as if the debt ceiling had everything to do with it. for example, last friday, the stock market fell. the reporting out of washington, it was the uncertainty over the debt ceiling. the growth numbers came back horrible. they were expecting 1.6% growth. it was 1.3%. they were downgraded last quarter. there's a sense in washington that everything revolves around washington. it's always been about the economy. and it's going to keep being about the economy. if there's a bright lining, and a silver lining, and there's not really one, is most of the problems in the stock market are about europe and other places. >> cornell, for president obama, this is a huge issue. he's been talk

let's bring in our chief political analyst, gloria borger.ng to get into this conversation as well, gloria. i think it's fair to say that s&p didn't necessarily completely blame the president. they put a lot of the blame not only on what the republicans wanted, but specifically on the tea party's push, very aggressive push to link raising the debt ceiling -- >> and no new revenues. i felt a little like alice through the looking glass, listening to michele bachmann here. because what s&p said specifically was that they had changed their assumption on the u.s. debt, because a majority of republicans in congress continue to resist any measure that would raise revenues. and so -- >> raising revenues is tax increases. >> tax increases. so they did not assume, for example, wolf, that the bush tax cuts on the wealthy would expire in 2012, even though the president has said that he would veto any move to change that. they did not assume that. that's $900 billion worth of revenue. over ten years. and they're just saying there is a situation in washing

. >> gloria, haven't there been a ton of committees already that have come up with plenty of ways to save money and cut the deficit? >> right. >> there's been -- i don't know how many. what is this one going to achieve -- get that the other ones haven't? isn't this a kind of -- oh, yeah, we'll created a committee? >> i think that's a really good question. i think there are a lot of skeptics about it and skeptics about it inside the white house. i think that the feeling is the hope is that maybe people will start seeing the light together when they're confronted with these draconian cuts that would kick in. it's like saying to them -- it's an admission that we can't do our jobs that you sent us here to do unless you threaten us with these awful cuts and if these cuts actually occurred we'd probably not get re-elected. so the feeling is that when you put this sledgehammer to them, maybe they will do their work. one other thing -- and again, there's a short period of time here, but if somebody said to me today, this isn't new territory. people understand the issues here. you had the ers

gloria borger is along with us tonight. the tone of the conversation, the substance of the conversation in washington is very, very different. >> it's very different. and i think you would have to say that the tea party has had the impact that it wanted to have. these members came to congress wanting to be transformational. i think in much the same way that barack obama wanted to be a transformational president. they've had a lot of success, they have changed the debate. don't forget when thor u of the debt ceiling first came up, the president said, i want a clean debt ceiling, i don't want anything attached to it. guess what, he got a lot attached to it. he got a lot attached to it that they didn't like. and they managed to take their republican leadership and say, this is what we want. now, john boehner, i would argue, was trying to do a bigger deal but the deal that he was trying to do, the $4 trillion deal he was trying to work out with the president had almost a trillion dollars in revenues, and in the end he had to pu

it could go higher. >> gloria to john's point, congress has try this. ed to put some kind of triggers in before, haven't they? >> sure. >> and they find a way to kind of get around their own rules. >> and they can find ways. they can always find ways to get around the rules. and i think that's the problem. that's why a lot of people are skeptical who have been in washington for some time, because they know that you can always do that. i was talking with a senior administration official who was skeptical about it. and he said to me, look, there are those who believe that threat of these cuts will cause some outbreak of reasoning around here. why would that happen? so we really don't know. it's very uncertain, i think. >> i mean, john, you look at the last committee where the simpson bowles, i kept hearing for months from politicians, from president obama and others saying, well, you know, we've got this deficit-cutting commission that as soon as they put in their report then we're going to act on that stuff. and it comes and everyone -- it makes a headli

but you came back from gloria. there a tremendous amount of damage -- one thing ocracoke has been through many, many times is hurricanes. >> yes. since i've lived here we haven't had a lot of structural damage. some roof damage from hurricanes. some flooding in some older houses. most of the damage has been highway 12 to the north. which that can really impact our daily life and tourism. >> mr. miller, hey, it's chad myers. i'm curious because i'm always curious as to why people stay. are you staying to protect your stuff? are you staying to protect your home? or do you think that you're just better off physically there? >> a little of both. really, you don't ever -- right now there's uncertainty, you know, whether it will make landfall. by the time you're pretty sure whether it's going to make landfall, you can't leave. and it's also very hard to get back when you leave. so as far as coming back and taking care of any damage, that can be real hard. and i do feel safer here. you know, somebody had any medical issue

gloria will watch it with us. what are you expecting from the white house today and what question would you ask if you were sitting in the front row? >> do you have the votes. that would be the question. the response i would presume would be ask the republicans. i think the big drama here today is of course whether john boehner -- how much of his caucus will he lose. my guess is he could lose 80 members of his caucus, and whether nancy pelosi can provide the votes among her democrats, some of whom are not happy with this to get this over the top, and whether the vice president and president can persuade them to do it, i remember back with the t.a.r.p. vote in the heat of the 2008 election where we were all waiting, and remember it failed. everybody assumed they cut a deal and it would pass and then, of course, it failed and then they came back the next day and passed it after the market dropped over 700 points. do you remember that? >> i certainly do. >> yeah. so i think the question here now is will the democrats
