documentary, "romney revealed," including moments from gloria borger interview we haven't seen before. we're also following very important developments with tropical storm isaac. look at this. the center of the storm now is expected to move away from the florida keys tonight and spend monday in the eastern gulf of mexico. it's expected to be hurricane strength by tuesday, as it approaches the u.s. gulf coast. foreca forecasters say it could hit new orleans tuesday night or early wednesday. that would be the anniversary of hurricane katrina. officials declared a state of emergency today. the louisiana governor, bobby jindal is asking for voluntary evacuations in low-lying areas. we will have a complete updated forecast in a little while. anderson, this is very very worrying. >> a remarkable to think it could hit on the anniversary of hurricane katrina. a lot of people in florida breathing a sigh of relief. now the focus turns to the gulf coast. we've all seen something extraordinary this evening, mitt romney and his wife, ann romney really opening about their remarkable life stories an

gloria borger is with us. we're also joined by james carville and david gergen.is interesting. you really don't hear mitt romney discussing faith too much on the campaign trail. >> no, and i think it's something that early on in the campaign they decided. alex knows an awful lot about this because he worked in the 2008 campaign when mitt romney had to give the faith speech to sort of talk about mormonism and talk about his faith. this time, i think, there was a sense we've already done that. we did that in 2008. we don't need to do that now. except when you run for the presidency, people want to know who you are. >> david, you're shaking your head head. you think that was a mistake? >> it's stunning to me that we've waited this long into this campaign for them to go public with this and talk to gloria the way they have. that conversation not only humanizes him, it begins to take some of the mystery out of his mormonism. the more he talks about his faith, we begin to see some of the caring side of mitt romney, some of the human side, which we have not seen. gloria

cnn's chief political analyst, gloria borger is on the line with us as well. derstand your sources are telling you the same thing, right? >> right. my sources sure are not steering me away from paul ryan, i can tell you that. and i think there are some things to keep in mind about paul ryan, which is that he is a conservative who has done the blueprint for the budget, which really does change the way medicare operates. essentially turns medicare into a voucher system. it is something the democrats have used. they've made paul ryan the poster child for people who want to take away your medicare. although his plan would only affect people who are currently over the age -- would not affect people who are currently over the age of 55. he is a little bit unpredictable, you know. he voted for the auto bailout. he voted for the t.a.r.p. bailout. so he is somebody who comes from a blue collar town in janesville, wisconsin. and he has been able to win in a district that is pretty split. he comes from working class roots himself. very different from mitt romney that way.

our chief political analyst gloria borger found out and she spoke exclusively to the woman in chargethe selection committee for mitt romney earlier this week and here's their discussion. >> you've been very invoed. >> yea. >> in the vetting and the process of choosing a vice presidential running mate which is very, very important. it's the first chance people get to look at how a president makes decisions. so what is it about the process of choosing a vice president? what does that tell us about how mitt romney makes decisions? >> well, that's something i learned working with him as chief of staff at the governor's office for four years that there is a way, he is very methodical in making his decisions and what he wants is a couple of things. first of all, he wants all of the information and we went about a very thorough process in making sure that we had a lot of information about a broad group. he also doesn't like to rule anything out until he has to. the first swathe was brought. we got a good cut of information about a lot of people and he then narrowed it down and we got even m

gloria borger joins me from washington.s interesting to see this state in national politics that's been democratic for so long, having so many republican faces. reince priebus now taking over. they want to change this state red come november. >> they hope they can make the state of wisconsin red. it is not anything that the romney campaign was counting on. but now i think they have it in their sights. everybody in wisconsin knows who paul ryan is. but most of the country doesn't. he's only 42 years old. and he's somebody who never felt he had a lot of time to accomplish his goals. and given his family history you can understand why. and ryan is a man in a hurry. in washington he bunks in his congressional office. it's cheaper, near work and closer to the house gym, which is good since he's a fitness buff who got some of his colleagues hooked on a gruelling exercise routine called p90x. >> it's a great workout. >> in a way he owes his devotion to fitness to his father. in particular, one day when the younger ryan was still a

. >> john king joins us now, along with political analyst gloria borger and ron brownstein who's also editorial director for "national journal." nice to see you, gentlemen. john, i'm going to start with you. you talk a little bit about what ryan could do to help mitt romney in wisconsin. outside of his district, district 1, what can he bring? is it enough to help him with the entire state and even the states surrounding wisconsin? >> it's a great question, soledad. picking a house member is risky. he's never run, meaning he never won statewide. he is well-known across the state, though. the energized republican base in wisconsin was already saying this will be a closer election. remember, the governor of wisconsin was just through a recall election. the republicans won that race despate all the democratic money, all the labor money that came in. the recent poll showed about five points. so in wisconsin there's no question the obama people are going to have to work harder. is it enough? who knows. then you get into the bigger questions. in the end, vice presidential picks almost never

we have john king and gloria borger. who are the prospects?g prospect is the 42-year-old chairman paul ryan, a conservative republican from the state of wisconsin, a blue collar guy who has been at the center of the big budget debates in washington for the past several years and especially since the republicans took control after the 2010 elections. this would be a bold and a risky choice for ryan. he has a controversial budget that would slash federal spending dramatically and slash the retirement program for senior citizens. some democrats have been salivating saying please pick him. conservatives are also begging, they want a big campaign with big ideas. paul ryan we are told have a lot of indications. including his home district and event tomorrow and the first of the bus tour on the uss wisconsin, a retired navy warship. we don't have confirmation of that. rob portman from ohio is a veteran of the bush administration and foreign policy experience and also with the budget director. again hoe represents the state of ohio which romney has to

and gloria borger of cnn interviewed him yesterday. but the print reporters can barely get a break here. >> first of all, this is nothing new. i mean, this -- you, howie, have written about a hostile relationship between mitt romney and the press corps way back in the primary days. >> but it's getting worse. >> i think it is getting worse. this is not the first time. a continuing problem with access to reporters. guys that i know, friends of mine who were on the trip. they didn't go on this trip to write a negative story about romney. they went to write the news. and some -- my advice to the romney campaign, if you don't want negative press, stop saying dumb things. but i want to pick up on what debra said, as well. i think -- i agree her. and i agree with you, debra. and with -- but i would add something else. i think there's a laziness on the part of the press corps, particularly some of us in cable television that it's easier to talk about gaffes than to talk about serious policy stuff. somebody says something maybe unintended that

he spoke about his experience with cnn chief political analyst, gloria borger. >> you had a meteoricongress. you came here at the age of 28. what's a nice boy doing here? >> i'm a policy person. some would say a nerd. >> my goal in life was to be an economist. and i got involved in public policy, public finance. and i learned at a young age, you can really make a difference in this country. and that's what motivated me to public service. >> how did you learn it? >> how did i learn? >> that you could make that difference? >> through mentors, and working for bill bennett, jack kemp, sam brownback. i learned at an early age, working for policy leaders, if you apply yourself, persevere, you can make a big difference. and pass legislation, which affects people's lives in a positive way. that's the idea of it all. and i also was very homesick. i'm a big hunter. a big fisherman. i'm a wisconsin guy. so, i moved back home when i was 27. after working out here for about five years. in the thinktanks and on the hill. and looked at running for an open seat for my hometown district. i basically
