joining me for tonight's conversations of the great minds is gloria steinem the steinem as a result we're now in feminist activist and journalist and the co-founder of both ms magazine and along with jane fonda and robert morgenthau women's media group writing has been featured in new york magazine which she also helped found as well as in ms squire and the new york times and icon of the women's movement is steinem is one of the leaders of the campaign to pass the equal rights amendment and remains of fierce advocate for all issues regarding gender equality gloria steinem great to see you thank you so much for joining me it's been a few years since we talked on the radio and i'm so pleased to have you here on the television program of this. i'm pleased to be here where you can have an actual conversation that's a great yes i agree how did you first become politicized what got you interested in the women's movement or actually essentially creating the modern women's movement. well politicized really happened in my childhood because every time my parents heard the word roosevelt they cried

and why did the name for a social movement become a dirty word at least on the right i'll ask gloria steinem and it's conversation with great minds. you need to know this the surveillance state is even bigger and scarier than we thought on wednesday night the guardian's glenn greenwald revealed that the national security agency is secretly collecting the phone records of millions of arisan users to see received authorization to track phone metadata over a three month period for a special court order issued didn't april we also now know that the guardian uncovered just the tip of the iceberg of an ongoing phone and internet records collection program that likely includes almost all major u.s. telecommunications companies earlier today president obama justified the n.s.a.'s policies while speaking at an event in san jose california and said that the country has to make some tough choices when it comes to balancing security and liberty. but i think it's important to recognize that you can't have one hundred percent security. and also then him one hundred percent privacy and zero inconvenience.

the second women's revolution was led by smith alumni and the -- and gloria steinem. gloria continues to fight to expand the role of women in our society. to give us full access to the rooms of power where decisions are being made. why the second revolution is still in progress, we simply cannot wait any longer for the third revolution to begin. i can't imagine a place where i would be more likely to find the leaders of that revolution than at thehere at smith. moment, our society's notion of success is largely composed of two parts. money and power. success, money, and power is practically become synonymous. but it is time for a third metric beyond money and power. one founded on well-being, wisdom, our ability to wonder and get back.-- and to give back. money and power by themselves are like a two legged stool. you cannot balance on them, eventually you will topple over. more and more people are toppling over every day. basically, success, the way we have defined it, is no longer sustainable. it is not sustainable for human beings, it is not sustainable [cheers]plane

my wife and i ran at an event for gloria steinem recently. -- you need unity of purpose if you are going to get anything done. they were chanting about the notion that the occupy movement is male-century. -- male-centric. they had a chance that that it t mean 99% men. you have people rending this garment of unity. >> you always find there are divisions. we have written about the fact that the camp in bloomington was run by women. the unity is around a core messages of the movement. the leadership of a movement drives people batty. where are the leaders? it is more of a leader-less movement and the new left was when you have a lot of gusy in power. it is not one place. there is a unity of issues. ending inequality, making people pay their fair share of taxes, finding a way out of the student debt slavery, finding ways to keep people in their homes, stopping the evictions, making sure that those who got us into the economic mess, the bankers and wall street, be held accountable -- and getting money out of our politics. [applause] >> one place you want to occupy for sure is the white house.
