gerri: well, as victims real from terrible losses, dangerous gm cars are still on the road. r months after the ignition switch recall began gm has repair just 7%-- 7% of the 2.6 million vehicles. foxbusiness joins me now from the gm dealership in naperville, illinois, jeff, only 7% of these cars repaired, why? >> it was very difficult to get these parts remanufactured because we're talking about very old cars and all parts and they had to start the production line against. i'm in a service department here as you point out at a buick gmc and i will tell you parts in this box here. what he just showed me these and these are parts coming in and we are talking about multiple different recalls. you don't make these cars. you are the person though who has to interact with the customer. what are you hearing from the customer? >> well, the customers are very understanding now as long as we communicate with them what the problem is, what it takes to fix it and that we can do. these two vehicles are waiting to get delivered today and we have 75 parts where we can get 75 cars repaired g

how many cars is gm estimated to sell this year? where are we?y they are probably gonna sell about 2.6, 2.7 million, in the united states. now, worldwide, they are gonna sell close to 10 million, about 9.8 million. that's the worldwide number, but here in the u.s., going to be david. 5, way past and we are not even six months, at the six-month mark in this year. blowing past all previous records here. >> very quickly, can we quantify what impact this has had on people's decision whether or not to buy a gm car, that is hurt the dealers? >> mandy, that's the surprising thing, thats athe surprising thing, sales have held up, traffic has held up. you look at their market share in january and where it's going to be, getle the sales numbers tomorrow it is down trackly, sales up 2% this year. so it's not keeping people out of the show room it is not keeping people from going in and buying. up until now, for some reason, a lot of people have said, you know what these at old gm. those vehicles recalled, doesn't impact what i'm seek in the show room now. b

gm did not manufacture this car and gm did not sell this car. when in fact, it was gm. they're simply saying there is invisible line beyond which they are not going to be responsible for. gerri: that invisible line of course is the bankruptcy. they're maintaining that it is two totally different companies. that the old gm pre-bankruptcy is a different company than the new gm, emerged from bankruptcy but really hard to tell because a lot of the players are the same. i want to read you, we have exclusively fox business a response from general motors, gm. this is what they have to say tonight. general motors they say has taken responsibility for its actions and will keep doing so. we also have acknowledged that we have civic and legal obligations relating to injuries that may relate to recalled vehicles. that is why we retained kenneth feinberg to advise us of what options may be available to deal with those obligations. lauren, to you, what is your response to this statement, and, are they waiting for feinberg to make some kind of a public statement or give some kind of a

seems every gm car is affected, doesn't it? >> well this cruze is gm's best selling car.ny is again selling that vehicle, the 2013-2014 chevy cruze. they have rescinded the stop sale order and here is why. they have located every single one, tens of thousands of them, some 33,000, every one of the cars with this potentially faulty inflater on the driver's side airbag that could be a problem. they're finding those cars and they're going to fix them. they're now selling these cars again. it is their best selling car, 248,000 of those sold last year, so the stop sale could put a dent in june sales if they couldn't sell them for a couple of days. this is a real problem for mary b barra and gm. the perception, your car is a computer, a specialized computer, with lots of parts from lots of different suppliers and if they're going to be recalling them over and over again or stop sales to fix a product, that makes consumers mad because they paid a lot of money for something, expected to work. it's really been a hit on the auto industry but specifically gm so far this year. >> abs

general motors is recalling more cars. gmd another 3.4 million of its cars have ignition keys that may move out of position if they are carrying too much weight. and yes, the problem is similar to the issue that caused the company to recall 2.6 million cars with ignition switch issues linked to 13 deaths. today's recall affects seven models made between 2000 and 2014. if you have any kind of gm car please go check it out. there are a few brands where nothing has been recalled, but still just to stay on the safe side. it is also boosting the charge it is taking in the quarter to $70 million. this all comes two days before mary barry returns to congress to testify about the earlier recall. joining me is new york op-ed columnist. thanks for being here. >> thanks for having me. >> is gm being cautious of lawsuits, being politically smart, or overly cautious. because now they are all sitting there going let's look at everything and be extra safe. should we be complimenting them? >> they have gone from a company that had a culture

we just got those car sales numbers for the month of may up 13% year over year. when gmll like this, they are in effect luring thousands of customers into their dealerships for repairs. sales teams jump on that chance to encourage those customers to buy new cars. some customers get loaner cars and buy those loaner cars and you have to remember that recalls happen so frequently this year in general that customers have sort of grown immune to it. people sort of seem to be numb to it. it doesn't affect how they make their purchases. people tend to purchase based on brand loyalty. also you have to remember that two of the models most impacted by the ignition switch recall don't exist anymore. one thing i will say is even though car sales have not been impacted and gm share prices down 3% since february, what has been impacted is gm's profit. first quarter profit down 85%. it cost the car company $1.7 billion because of those recall issues. sales doing pretty well but profit not so much. >> recalls may not be over yet because reuters is reporting this morning that at least 74

gm right now. but they recalled, what, 28 million cars so far this year. are we to the point now where maybe they're overdoing it? >> well, there's no doubt. when you look at the 54 recalls from general motors this year, a number of them are very ticky tack minor things that ordinarily would have been handled at the service bull ten. however, there are a number of substantial recalls amongst those 28 million that involve potentially deadly defects or in some cases are deadly defects. so you had to be careful about mao you look at it. it's a huge number, bill. there's no doubt about that. any time you have a company recalling 28 million vehicles, it's going to get a lot of attention. there are some in these recalls that are clearly initiated because the frederal government is looking at them so closely. >> collin, we've been talking about red flags for gm. the government still investigating for any criminal charges of general motors. if there are any criminal charges brought against general motors for any of the employees, how you would react to that? would

clearly bear that out, gm sales are up for two percent last month, -- 13% last month, but it is a sign of the conventional wisdom. one would think that potential buyers would hear the carl, and think, i will buy a ford. found is theve reputation damage takes longer to filter into consumer behavior and the pattern that we are seeing with gm is actually more similar to that which we saw with lululemon, despite being in different categories. the impact was not seen until six or nine months later. we think that's the case with gm. >> how much does cost play a role here? gm stem some of the reputational damage, potential damage to its sales by offering consumers more incentives, discounts, rebates, the sorts of things we saw a lot of before the financial crisis but have become scarcer as companies become better managed? >> they absolutely make an impact and we may see that later in the year it sales slowdown. i think they have been reluctant to do so because the models on the shelves now are not the focus of the recall. that is often a tried-and-true trick used in the auto industry and we may see some of it later. but we think there are a lot of shoes left to drop in this i

who is buying gm cars right now? >> a lot of people. think it was a surprising headline. it sounds crazy. you have all of these negative headlines and you, what, sell more new cars? the proof is that more people are going to the showrooms, more of that traffic means more people are buying these new cars. you've got to remember, thousands of people with these recalled cars are getting loner cars and then they are deciding that they need to buy those loners. it's a steep discount to all of those people. look at the numbers. gm sales up 13% in may from a year ago. one analyst said there have been so many recalls, consumers have become somewhat immune to it. keep in mind, it's not just gm. it's across the board toyota sales up 17%. >> gm has recalled more cars than it has sold in the last five years. does the company really consider this a win? >> it's one thing to have really strong sales numbers, no doubt. general motors, you have to remember, is in the middle of a criminal probe as to whether this company knowingly covered up the ignitio

the defect led gm to recall 2.6 million cars but before the recall the melton's settled their case with gm for an undisclosed amount. now they're fighting an uphill legal battle to reopen it. >> they thought they had the truth when they settled their case. we now know they had some of the truth but not all of the truth. >> reporter: in a new lawsuit the melton's allege that gm hid key documents from them and say a gm engineer lied in a sworn deposition. >> we -- the design and release engineer for the ignition switch in the '05 cobalt? >> yes, i was. >> reporter: the melton's attorney gave cnn the deposition of ray degorgio who denied changing the ignition switch. >> there was never a work order outlining this spring. >> so if any such change was made, it was made without your knowledge and authorization? >> that is correct. >> reporter: but in 2006 degorgio signed this form authorizing a fix to the ignition switch making it harder to turn inadvertently. >> you know that he lied under oath? >> the data that's been put in front of me indicates that but i'm waiting for the full investigat
