brian: who was arthur goldberg? tyler: that is a very good question. i guess a lot of people would not remember arthur goldberg. i think of him as almost an uncle. he started life in the labor world and was the chief negotiator for the steelworkers. steelworkers? i think the steelworkers. one of the major unions. and kennedy made him secretary of labor. and then later made him associate justice of the supreme court. he was kennedy's second appointment to the supreme court. the first of being white. and then johnson talked goldberg into leaving the supreme court to become ambassador to the u.n. and drew had known goldberg when he worked -- i think he was general counsel of the steelworkers. and that is when drew first met him. but then they just became very close, very, very close. it seems like the day is not complete unless he has goldberg to breakfast, lunch, dinner, or all three. it's amazing. brian: in 1965, he was working with jack anderson. what was jack anderson's relationship to your stepfather? tyler: jack had started working for drew in proba

northern virginia bureau chief jeff goldberg joining us from the scene of the morning's standoff. jeff? jeff: jonathan, neighbors tell us there was a great deal of commotion for many hours earlier this morning. as the police surrounded a home in the town home development. they were pleading and trying to have him put down the weapon. but he shot and killed himself. this is 39-year-old david abbott, a detective with the rahm emanuel police -- detectivh the manassas police department. they were trying to issue search warrants yesterday. he was wanted for crimes involving inappropriate communication with a 13-year-old boy who he met coaches for a local youth hockey league. the relationship started when

jeff goldberg is live. what is going on out there? jeff: i want to tell you where we are standing. e street and second in northwest washington. overlooking 395 north, just by massachusetts a. you can see a dramatic police presence between the metropolitan police department, arlington police as well. traffic diverted off 395 going to massachusetts avenue. here is what happened. this is 3:00 today. report of a shot fired at the pentagon city mall parking lot. arlington police responded. notice the vehicle that fit the description that came in for the call. a chase ensued. the vehicle with the suspect inside crossed over the bridge, 14th street bridge into washington. at some point got off 395, perhaps on independent avenue -- independence avenue. got back on 395 where the chase ended here. two suspects got out of the vehicle. they were apprehended wile trying to get away on foot. we are told at some point in northwest washington here a firearm was thrown out of the

northern virginia bureau chief jeff goldberg joining us live to explain why that is it. jeff? jeff: we are hearing mixed reactions to this plan. at this time of day you can see the traffic build up on 66. it's a real nightmare. the virginia transportation leaders have a plan to reduce the pain on the roads. this morning in a unanimous vote in alexandria the commonwealth transportation board agreeing to move forward with a plan to add tolling on i-66 inside the beltway. it will have solo drivers paying to use the h.o.v. lane similar somewhat to the hot lanes on 495, 395 and i-95. vehicles with two or more drivers will still be allowed to use the lanes for free. the price of the toll will depend on the traffic volume but it is expected to be in the average of $5 to $7. transportation officials say the move could open the door for widening 66 as well at some point in the future.
