we are challenged in golden gate park. it is not immune from the public safety challenges we see throughout the city. it is a balance. i think golden gate park is very safe. we welcome 15 million visitors a year. i also believe that nothing good happens in golden gate park at night. i think we need to take a hard look at saving money, resources, preventing vandalism by thinking about strategy is to restrict people from engaging in bad behavior in golden gate park at night. i feel very fortunate to work with the richmond district who invests resources. our coordination has never been better in keeping golden gate park safe. with all that, in the past today weeks, we have had some unfortunate incidents of violent crime. our tree vandal is back cutting down trees. this is a public policy issue we struggle with. it is one reason why the parks and recreation department needs resources. thank you. >> mayor lee, i want to salute you. you have been a breath of fresh air. i know you have been meeting with a small business community.

well, for one thing, the golden gate park, the roads, the park commissioners were very jealous about. they didn't want anybody to use the golden gate park roads for commerce or transporting things. they wanted to keep it for recreation. so for a long time i thought maybe they used that streetcaroline on lincoln way, used the rail, somehow put the cars on some kind of fladbed rail thing, brought them out to the edge and dragged them across the sand, perhaps on sleds or something. i finally came across what heyman did in an article. he actually somehow talked the commissioners into using the golden gate park roads. so he -- remember, the apparatus, most of the machinery, is taken out of these cars which makes them a lot lighter. they're mostly wood at this point. they're probably brought out, pulled by horses through golden gate park road. then in 1892, the great highway gets improved. then he's only got maybe half a block of sandunes to drag these cars on to his land. now, once you get these cars kind of sitting in the sandunes and somebody buys a lot three blocks away, i don't know ex

it consists of everything from monument to golden gate park to market street, other works in the collection, from the wpa era, the quite tower, the works from the george washington high school. we have the contemporary education, where they depict some of the vocational arts that were taught at george washington high school. what is interesting is the artist's and corp. of some of the -- incorporation of some of the architectural elements. they used the speaker from the p a system as part of the design. on the opposite side of the library, we have a large fresco which depicts the academic subjects that were taught at the time. it serves as a foil to the other fresco in the library, we have academic subjects on one side, vocational subjects on the other, and result is the concept of a well-rounded education. additionally, what we plan to do is the academy of hospitality and tourism will be part of, so the students can share with other students, faculty, the neighborhood, and others to come by and what to look to the artwork we have. >> by working with the students, we hope to raise awareness

forced us to take a step back and look at finding alternatives to the current recommended site in golden gate park. we have conducted a number of workshops to address those comments. those have been completed. we are now starting up this phase. the project was essentially put on hold pending these three sets of workshops. we are working very closely with the water supply group to facilitate that process. this is a chart that i also share with you every quarter. it shows the approved budget in red in comparison to the forecasted costs in blue. we continue to have forecasted cost that is well below approved. with respect to the last quarter, the savings were reduced by $39 million. it is important to keep in mind that we are still forecasting to underrun are approved budget by $5 million. let's look a little bit at the breakdown of the forecasted cost change between the second and third quarters. what you see in the boxes are the changes from q3 to q2. the red ones are cost increases. this has increased by 40.5 and $13.8 million respectively. our construction costs have decreased for a net of $39 mi

john mclaren had said that golden gate park was too far away. proposed that we have a park in the south end of the city. the campaign slogan was, people need this open space. one of the things that had to open is there were a lot of people who did a homestead here, about 25 different families. their property had to be bought up. so it took from 1928 to 1957 to buy up all the parcels of land that ended up in this 317 acres. the park, as a general rule, is heavily used in the mornings and the evenings. one of the favorite places is up by the upper reservoir because dogs get to go swim. it's extremely popular. many fights in the city, as you know, about dogs in parks. we have 317 acres and god knows there's plenty of room for both of us. man and his best friend. early in the morning people before they go to work will walk their dogs or go on a jog themselves with their dogs. joggers love the park, there's 7 miles of hiking trails and there's off trail paths that hikers can take. all the recreational areas are heavily used on weekends. we have the g
