well, for one thing, the golden gate park, the roads, the park commissioners were very jealous about. they didn't want anybody to use the golden gate park roads for commerce or transporting things. they wanted to keep it for recreation. so for a long time i thought maybe they used that streetcaroline on lincoln way, used the rail, somehow put the cars on some kind of fladbed rail thing, brought them out to the edge and dragged them across the sand, perhaps on sleds or something. i finally came across what heyman did in an article. he actually somehow talked the commissioners into using the golden gate park roads. so he -- remember, the apparatus, most of the machinery, is taken out of these cars which makes them a lot lighter. they're mostly wood at this point. they're probably brought out, pulled by horses through golden gate park road. then in 1892, the great highway gets improved. then he's only got maybe half a block of sandunes to drag these cars on to his land. now, once you get these cars kind of sitting in the sandunes and somebody buys a lot three blocks away, i don't know ex

first the west side recycled water project is proposing to irrigate golden gate park plus lincoln park and presido and environmental review begins later this year. the key thing there is that as by irrigating golden gate park, we'll be able to shift the groundwater that is pumped into golden gate park for irrigation purposes to potable supply for the city. that is why recycled water is a piece of this, to shift the grounds water and use recycled water of lesser quality for landscape irrigation. the san francisco groundwater supply project proposed supplying 4mgd from the west base aquifer on the west side of the san francisco. it's a very productive aquifer there and blending that with regional supplies and that water will be distributed throughout san francisco. the blue area is the part that would actually receive that blend of water. most of san francisco will get a little bit of groundwater mixed in with their hetch hetchy supply and this is one of our key water local supply projects that services in normal years and dry years. the groundwater storage and recovery ec

will bring thousands more people into our city whether they are going to the concerts in our golden gate park are going to america's cup beginning next month all the way through september -- or they are making game day trips to the park. this will get people all around the city where they need to be and these will be the standard that we have for the future beginning now. i'm proud for munis and the commission and they are working with dpw. speaking about dpw, muhammad and i worked together and we literally saw people who realized the second the bus arrives they can't eat on the bus. so where do they toss it? if they weren't looking or realized there was a trash can next to them as most bus stops do have them. they were irresponsible. we literally saw people tossing things as they got on boarding the buses. that's not good behavior. obviously we need to do a lot more education. we need to end that practice and we need to keep and attitude, a very spirit of keeping our public assets clean and beautiful as you see them today. this is what these buses ought to look like a few years from now. we

lincoln way is also a busy street running parallel to the golden gate park. on a good day buses drop off passengers in front of the station driveway and back up the curve. when there was an event in the park, a problem occurred to me. with the size of the proposed convenient store, look of space for cars to maneuver around the site. they stated people will only use it [speaker not understood]. please give drivers more room so they won't get caught in the queue unable to move. this will create irritated and frustrated drivers. i don't live next to the station, but i do live nearby on 26th avenue. 19th avenue is already difficult for pedestrians and lincoln way is also a problem. i am very sensitive to this because my husband was killed by a hit and run driver when crossing the street on lincoln way a few blocks from the proposed site. i don't want anyone else to suffer this tragedy. our city is one of the most dangerous in the city for pedestrians. we need to anticipate problems and ensure our streets are made as safe as possible. it has been stated in the pape

john mclaren had said that golden gate park was too far away. he proposed that we have a park in the south end of the city. the campaign slogan was, people need this open space. one of the things that had to open is there were a lot of people who did a homestead here, about 25 different families. their property had to be bought up. so it took from 1928 to 1957 to buy up all the parcels of land that ended up in this 317 acres. the park, as a general rule, is heavily used in the mornings and the evenings. one of the favorite places is up by the upper reservoir because dogs get to go swim. it's extremely popular. many fights in the city, as you know, about dogs in parks. we have 317 acres and god knows there's plenty of room for both of us. man and his best friend. early in the morning people before they go to work will walk their dogs or go on a jog themselves with their dogs. joggers love the park, there's 7 miles of hiking trails and there's off trail paths that hikers can take. all the recreational areas are heavily used on weekends. we have the

golden gate national parks. and that happened 40 years ago when the army decided that those lands were no longer necessary for national defense. so, that strategic entrance to this harbor was the last land that our troops and sailors and marines and soldiers would see if they departed for the pacific theater in world war ii and korea and vietnam, and also the first thing they would see upon returning back to the bay area. so, between the presidio and the head lands, we now have wonderful park lands that have been converted. we call it converting from post to park. repurposing those lands from national defense to environmental defense. and i believe it is probably the most accessful base conversion in the united states. if you haven't been to the presidio, i think you should try and make that. if you're from out of town, it's a spectacular transition there. so, these golden gate national parks that i happen to be the superintendent of has now become after 40 years the second most visited national park in our coun

mgd of potable groundwater that is net increase of 2.8 mgd because we're going to be replacing golden gate park igation with the groundwater with recycled water and that makes it available for potable uses. in the west side we're talking about that for the golden gate park and the eastside there is a projection as well to produce a cowl couple of mcd for recycled water for san francisco. that is our current focus to make sure these projects happen. replacing pipelines are really easy, but additional supply represents complexity that makes these very challenging projects. additional water supply options we're always looking at more conservation and you think i made a presentation about a year-ago about changing out fixtures and working with daly city to increase their plant capacity of maybe 1.3 mgd. south san francisco for recycled water we had an mou with them last year, but their level of interest has diminished and it's not that important in their capital improvement project. there is a small project for menlo country club and a big one we're working on and will bring to you later this year
