let's get more reaction with paul goldstein. >> paul goldstein and his wife were there that day. nancy goldstein was running in the boston marathon. she was stopped before she got to the finish line thankfully because of the bombing, so she was not injured, but paul was in the thick of it. he was an emt who worked the finish line to help the injured after the explosion, and paul joins us on the cnbc news line. it's been a long two years i can imagine, paul. what is your initial reaction to hearing about these guilty verdicts? >> well my initial reaction is i'm a little surprised they had to deliberate for two days but i'm glad that they came in with a guilty verdict on all counts. >> paul take us back to that day, what it was like what was running through your head at the time. obviously there was then the chase afterwards that shut down pretty much all of boston. again, just if you can take us back to that moment and what was -- what it felt like. >> well it was kind of eerie. at first when we heard the bombs, my first thought was patriot's day, maybe there were a couple canons

in january, the nra filed suit against those three cities, lan caflt, philadelphia and pittsburgh goldstein said the central issue resolvedrevolved around an issue. >> notion of preemption is a part of our law in pennsylvania that prohibits municipalities from passing local regulations of firearms. it is a set of regulatory powers that the general assembly has reserved to itself. act 192 was designed to bring more force to that preemption. >> reporter: but pennsylvania's law 192 may be subject to constitutional challenges. philadelphia, pittsburgh and lancaster argued that the measure passed in 2014 was illegally tagged to a bill on scrap metals. >> you're going to have your fee covered either way. >> well, if the law is found unconstitutional our fees are not covered. doesn't mean it's not right, many municipalities across pennsylvania heeded the warning and withdrew these illegal ordinances. lancaster, philadelphia and pittsburgh think they have some special knowledge, do so at their taxpayers pearl. >> do you think they are scared of the nra? >> i think they did so because they looked at

nbc signed on tom goldstein as nbc's supreme court analyst.citing to have that kind of reporting fire power focus right here in this building as the supreme court heads toward two more huge cases that have the potential to hugely change some controversial policy matters in the country. next week on tuesday, the court will hear the big national case on same-sex marriage, which potentially could legalize same-sex marriage nationwide. or dot opposite. then the day after that, the court will hear the lethal injection case. they're ruling in that case has the potential to change the death penalty nationwide. but the specific case they have taken up on the death penalty is one from oklahoma. oklahoma made itself famous in the past year for a badly screwed up execution in which the prisoner they were trying to kill regained consciousness in the middle of the execution. he personally ended up trying to help the execution team get into his veins. it went on for so long that oklahoma called off the execution in the middle of it and considered trying to

more on what to expect, let me bring in nbc news supreme court analyst tom goldstein.rning, tom. >> good morning, jose. >> so there are four separate cases before the court. one freech ohio, tennessee, michigan, and kentucky. what specifically are these cases all about? >> well two years ago the supreme court 5-4 struck down a federal law that refused to recognize state same-sex marriages. and that ruling launched a series of challenges to state same-sex marriage bans across the country. . now most federal courts of appeals read the tea leaves and struck those state laws down. but the court of appeals that has jurisdiction over these four states upheld the bans and those plaintiffs have gone on to the supreme court. so the justices have limited the issues before them to just two questions. what are they? >> well, the first is the most fundamental and that is does the constitution require a state to allow same-sex couples to marry? it will second is kind of a backup argument, and that is for couples that live in a state in which same-sex marriage is legal to -- say the
