gonzales: thank you for having me. my life has never been easy. at two months old, my father abandoned me and at six years old, my mother remarried and it was a very abusive environment. i remember spending time in a battered women's shelter. at seven years old, i went and lived with my grandparents and my grandparents essentially raised me until the age of 15. at 15, i went to live on my own. i have lived in my own since i was 15 years old. i was a half credit away from graduating high school when my grandfather, who is essentially my father, passes away. and i drop out of high school, downward spiral. praise god, he pulled me out of that and he set me on my journey. i joined the navy at 18 without a high school diploma. i came in as an e1, and 20 years later i retired as a master chief. it is the highest enlisted rank, and now i am finishing up my phd. so that is part of my journey. greta: that is a lot to unpack there. who were some of your mentors? how were you pushed to join the navy in some of the early years of
