gonzalo, the strongest hurricane of the atlantic season. gonzalo is pulling away from bermuda. and we're seeing our temperatures, the warm temperatures pull away from us. it's happening overnight tonight. turning colder. we'll see readings in the 40s overnight tonight, with gusty winds this evening, they'll settle down a little this evening, but not going to vanish overnight. we're tracking chilly rain for next week. 5 degre 59 degrees in allentown. this is the cloudy view of centre city here at the nbc 10 studios. the flag still blowing. a little bit breezy. but rainfall is all off to the northwest. the showers are trying to move into the area. they're not going to make it over the hills. but we are getting the clouds from those showers. those clouds will stay with us for most of the evening. they will be clearing tomorrow. so you'll see a sunny sunday. there you can see gonzalo pulling away, heading off to the northeast. now just a category 1. it will diminish in strength. it will push out to sea. pushing back st. john's overnight tonight with just some rain and wind. but mos

gonzalo now the strongest storm in the atlantic thus far this season. and residents are making sure to prepare for its arrival. you can see here that the residents are boarding up windows and getting last-minute provisions in place. now, at least 1500 homes are still without power following fay last week, and so since gonzalo is coming through, once again knock out power to residents as it moves through the area. here's a look at the track right now. again hurricane warning in place. right south of here is where gonzalo is located packing winds of 220 kilometers per hour moving to the north/northeast at 24. now, as we go through friday, and into saturday, and through the day saturday, you will continue to be under the influence of this system. strong winds, heavy downpours, rough surf. all battering the island during the 24 to 48 hour period. once we get past that and move into sunday, i think that's when we're going to see the clearing, and we should see a quick improvement. but again, during this key time period, this is when you need to now hunker do

by the time gonzalo moved away, it knocked out power to about 90% of this island. were completely nearly -- nearly completely in the dark. now today was a busy day for crews as they cleaned up. trees were toppled and power lines draped over roadways making nearly everything impassable. but this island was prepared for this storm. by this afternoon most of the major debris was cleared away. and already roads are passable. so this island is back up and running. this storm now is moving off to the north towards new finland. it is still a category 1 hurricane with winds at about 90 miles per hour. so we are definitely breathing a sigh of relief here in bermuda. but i want to quickly point out hurricane ana out near the hawaiian islands. it's still a category 1 hurricane, but it's not going to hit the islands directly. but it is still producing tropical storm conditions. hilo already picked up three inches of rain. this storm is going to stay well south of the island. it's going to continue to move away over the course of the next couple of days. but rain is going to re

that is the eye of hurricane gonzalo. this is bermuda here. you can see the lull in the precipitation, but when that eye wall moved across the island we saw a marked difference in the wind speed as one would expect. it's impressive to be able to clock this out. winds dropped dramatically and on the back side of the eye they picked up to 181 kilometers per hour. you can see the wind strikes improving through saturday. good news for residents there as the storm moves away. we've monitored hurricane anna. you can see the outer rain bends impacting the big island of hawaii. we are not expecting a big hit with this storm. we should gradually see this weaken and move further to the west. however, we will get to rainfall and perhaps some local coastal erosions especially in the southeast facing islands. also going to have upwards of 50 to 80 millimeters of rainfall in some remote locations and gusty winds. we should see the brunt of the storm stay far enough west where it shouldn't impact the main islands too much. >> i'm sure the people living there

that's about the diameter of the eye of gonzalo.e video out of hamilton, bermuda, the capital of bermuda moments ago. and you have to kind of look through the haze, the palm trees are really bending with the winds. on facebook we actually have some "action news" viewers who are living in bermuda right now and they told me they are really taking the storm seriously. it is on a similar track to fabian, which back in 2003 caused four deaths and $300 million in damage. so this is the latest from the national hurricane center. maximum sustained winds 115 miles per hour. a category three hurricane, a major hurricane moving northeast at 16 miles per hour. the center of the storm will pass right over bermuda or very closely within the next three hours. then it will begin to weaken as it heads towards nova scotia. talking about a storm urge that could be about 10 feet. bermuda is hilly, but it will cause significant coastal flooding. 15-20 to the waves and wind gusts 100-125 miles per hour. the top of the hills it could be stronger. and heav

hurricane gonzalo, now a category 4. and look at this. you can see it right there. the eye of the storm growing this evening. and in the west, ana taking aim at hawaii. a state of emergency there tonight. but we begin with abc's gio benitez in bermuda, where that hurricane will hit. >> reporter: less than 24 hours from now, this could be the strongest storm to hit bermuda in more than a decade, hurricane gonzalo. and tonight, glimpses of nature's wrath as the winds pick up here. the storm already killing one in st. maarten earlier this week. bermuda is still trying to recover form tropical storm fay, which came through here just days ago, and remember that was just a tropical storm. but look. it tore out massive trees and just look at that concrete. the thomas family saw what fay did too, and they're taking no chances. calling the airline and rusing to the airport, which is already being boarded up. finally landing a few tickets. a lot of people in the u.s. on the east coast, when they evacuate, they're able to sort of drive up somewhere else, but you guys have no o

another big story tonight-- bermuda is in the crosshairs of hurricane gonzalo. it is a powerful category 3. from space, it almost looks beautiful but on the ground, it's going to be an ugly picture. eric fisher, our chief meteorologist at our cbs boston station wbz is following this for us. eric. >> reporter: scott, the worst of hurricane gonzalo is impacting bermuda right now. northern eye wall is moving across the island, a category 3 storm, sustained winds at 115 miles per hour, but wind have been gusting over 120 miles per hour so far this evening. you see the circulation. the eye wall just starting to move in across the island, and waves up to 30 feet have been crashing ashore. those winds as well have knocked out power to more than half of the customers on bermuda so far this evening. so a destructive storm. it will be gone by the morning. we'll have time to clean up the damage and take a look at what gonzalo has left behind. but, scott, a very rare storm fair very small island nation. >> pelley: eric fisher of wbz, eric, thank you very much. and then ther
