good morning. >> good morning. and hello, we are waking up to a big change over the west. we have been talking about the major winter storm. i want to take you to video we captured over portions of california. right now, we are dealing with rain still occurring. but this is the video they captured yesterday in san francisco. i want to show you what occurred in sonoma county. now this area has been so dry for so long, that any rain will cause these issues. a big mud slide, and flooding was a big concern. it was a mess across the pacific northwest and northern california. again, the rain they received was not enough to get them out of that drought. but they are expecting more rain today. it's a fast-moving storm through the afternoon and into tomorrow. most of the rain around reading, sacramento, just north of san francisco. almost about 12 inches have fallen over portions of california. now as we go to the southeast, another storm, a major winter storm we are keeping our eyes on. could see any where between 1 to 3 i

michelle, good morning. >> reporter: good morning.ertainly scary moments and trouble on board that flight bound for frankfurt, germany. instead, making an emergency landing here at newark liberty international. we're told this morning that more than 200 passengers and crew members are safe. some of those passengers, though, once they landed took to social media, describing an unidentifiable burning smell and fumes in the cabin. this morning united airlines tells abc news that the plane was diverted because of the reports of that smell in the cabin. now, certainly that flight took off from dulles airport late last night. it was expected to move on to frankfurt, instead, diverted here and landing at liberty international airport. now, the boeing 777 is one of the smaller, more efficient jumbo jets in boeing's fleet that services international routes, and certainly investigators will be looking at this plane to see and pinpoint the origin of that burning smell in the cabin. of course, boeing has had some other issues with some of its oth

good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you. they were on the scene until about with five minutes ago. they wrapped up here at this home on pine ridge way where for the past several hours they have been processing the scene and collecting evidence. we did see them bring out a long object covered in a paper bag. they would not tell us if that was a rifle or something else. the homeowner wasn't hurt. considering what happened. around 8:00 a man broke into his home here on pine ridge way, and started firing shots at him. apparently missing the man who lives here. the homeowner then grabbed his gun and fired back, hitting his unwelcome guest in his home at least once. the homeowner called 911, alerted police, he told officers he saw the man that he shot hop into a car with another person, sped off. a short time later they did find the man at a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead after being shot by the homeowner here on pine ridge way. as you can see behind me, the police as i mentioned, have left. they are saying that

>> reporter: good morning to you. the sheriff's office telling us that they have been to this home many, many times since 2011, exactly 19 times in that time. last night around 11:00 they were called out after a visit from an emt crew, an ambulance crew. it was a medical call. during that call for whatever reason the emts, someone felt it was necessary to call for law enforcement. sheriff deputies showed up and there was some sort of confrontation with a person in the home. at least one of the deputies shot and killed this person. this taking place around 11:00 last night. a neighbor telling one of our photographers that they heard six to eight gun shots. that person is now dead in that home behind me here on pa say yograndee. we're waiting for a public information officer to come out. we're wait forge him to give us a belter sense of what led up to this shooting. again this is a home where deputies had visited 19 times since 2011, for various issues, one being at least one of those times domestic violence. one person

good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning. all of those people who live inside this duplex in san leandro made it out thanks to a neighbor who warned everybody about this fire although we did just find out from firefighters that a dog was killed in this fire, a yellow lab. she was found hiding under one of the beds in one of the downstairs bedrooms. let me give you a look at the scene. you can see alameda county firefighters still out here this morning making sure this fire is all the way out. keeping an eye on some of the hot spots. it's a two-story home that caught fire on fairway drive near doolittle. this fire began at 4:30. when firefighters got here, flames were pouring from both floors. crews were forced to fight the fire from outside. this duplex has two different units in it. upstairs, a grandmother was sleeping with her two grandkids and they wouldn't have woken up if it weren't for a downstairs neighbor who ran up banging on ther to. that man may have helped to save several lives but he says he was really trying to
