klobuchar: when i get home, i've been reading books, and i read this book on leadership by doris kearns goodwinshe looks at a number of presidents and talks about the defining quality that united them was this quality of resilience. not how they lead when things were easy or how they handle things in their lives when things were easy, but how they handle things when things were hard. and one of the presidents she talks a lot about is franklin delano roosevelt. and then i remember the story about him, which is this -- when he died, they put his body on a train. the train went through america, people lined the train tracks out of respect. at one of the places, a reporter stood and saw this guy, a simple guy who had his hat off, and he had his hat across his chest, and he was sobbing. and the reporter goes up to the guy and says, "sir, do you know president roosevelt, did you know him?" and the guy says, "no, i didn't know president roosevelt. but he knew me. he knew me." they weren't particularly goodwiners at that point in time. >> donna, one of the focuses of the bloombergis clearly against bernie sanders. they are privately concerned and publicly concerned he's going to win california. with the numbers there, he could rack up enough delegates just in california to be a prohibitive favorite going into the convention. >> i think joe and i both run in party primaries. they are brutal. i do think it's actually a way to vet the candidates. i think bloomberg has his own questions he has to answer about his campaign, whether it's treatment of women or some of these other issues, stop and frisk and others that have been raised. i think all the candidates do. the primary process is the way to do that. if bloomberg is going to engage in a stop bernie campaign, i think that's one way to tackle it. the other way is to be on the debate stage and present your own report and have that out for scrutiny and be willing to have it scrutinized and answer those questions. >> then we have this unusual report in the drudge report, which usually reflects republican or conserv

doris kearns goodwin, you have watched a lot of these state of the unions. >> unfortunately. >> how doese pointed out in our earlier hour all the lies about the economy, the lies about protecting preexisting conditions in health care, but as a performance how did the president do last night? >> once upon a time there were state of the union messages in the old, old days that used to put forth a governing message to the congress of what they wanted from the congress. they've been taken over now by all these little side lights of all the stories and the emotional ones which as we were talking about do make a difference, but what it struck me a couple things, number one, we all wondered would he speak about impeachment? we knew clinton when he was in the same position having had impeachment in the house but not yet the senate chose not to do it at all and just took forward about where we're going from here. we know that nixon when he was already under condition of trouble because the hearings had happened, the saturday night massacre thought he wouldn't talk about impeachment, either, but t

. >>> joining me now, liz goodwin from the "boston globe," scott spradling and neil lavac. let's start with that biden-buttigieg side by side. how is that going to play on tuesday? >> the biden campaign hasn't taken questions since december. it's february now and he's just starting to change his campaign. he's changed his campaign manager and running this negative ad. i think we've seen this before, the old time candidate who says i deserve this versus the young fresh person who's very attractive to voters. there's something here in the secret sauce, if you will, with pete buttigieg. he's sort of rocking the boat and that's why biden is taking aim at him. >> do you think that appeals to new hampshire voters? >> i definitely do. i think folks in new hampshire are looking at the electability. this is all about who can beat donald trump. if you are casting a ballot on tuesday, you're trying to figure out who can make that change. pete buttigieg has drilled into something here and has found the momentum that's made him real. in new hampshire they break late. we've seen polls th
