when you look at google, what is the most innovative part of google? is it the technology of the search, or is it the business model of this amazing advertising system that you've created? >> it ultimately has to be both in a company like google. the company was started with a research idea of how to do search better. our founder invented this while at stanford. classic two young people at stanford who go off to form a company and are hugely successful. along the way in the first couple of years, there was a question of how to make money. then another group, again, a couple of very young people right out of stanford, figured out this targeted advertising model. you need both. >> a successfully innovative enterprise also needs to be about having fun. so, that brilliant minds are inspired to creative heights. at least so says eric schmidt and it means allowing people to be themselves. >> the people who are very, very creative are not going to show up at 9:00, leave at 5:00 and punch a card. they're going to be interesting. they're going to be fun. they'r

we saw the perfect example of that in google.e to say that i am still persuaded that the government has proven to have a powerful role in innovation, at least in the past. look at all of the achievements of darpa in inventing the internet, gps. without them america and the world would be a very different place. after all, the fastest growing economies in the world today, china, south korea, are using the government to fund research, to promote innovation, in industry after industry, they're establishing commanding leads because of government policy. so, i think we need both -- government support and a vibrant private sector to foster innovation. but my final thought about all this is that even if we do outinnovate the rest of the world, even if we maintain the cutting edge, there is still a big question. given the way technology works and globalization works these days, will innovation benefit the average american? will he or she have a better job as a consequence of innovation? the answer is, we can't be sure. take a look at app

google says it was traced to jinan in china. out a statement saying they were victims, too, saying china we firmly oppose computer hacking or any illegal activity and will severely punish anyone engaging in such activity according to law. computer hacking is an international problem and china is also a victim. now, the u.s. government has said they are looking into the problem. they have no evidence of their accounts being hacked so far, but they are cooperating with google, they said. >> what about people who have gmail accounts, what are they supposed to do? any advice? >> as a general rule, be careful about any links that you open, especially if you don't know the source of where that e-mail comes from. in this particular case, however, it does seem to have been very targeted toward u.s. government officials, chinese activists. the e-mails that came in were very good copies that essentially looked very real, like they had come from an authentic source. goes to show, you can never be too careful when someone sends you a link.
