blog world, too, and we have to face that. some readers wrote in accusing me of making that up. i thought this was odd. because in this age of the internet, you can google anything and find the source. this particular quote came from a james baldwin profile of king in a 1961 issue of harper's magazine. what really struck me about the reaction was that seemingly, these readers could not conceive of a time when black leaders used to speak this frankly about personal behavior in the black community. it is just a foreign concept to them that that is how black leadership in america used to regularly do, which might tell you a lot about black leadership today, frankly. these readers could not conceive of that. king was operating in a world -- it is so different in terms of his expectations. his message was to black people -- we need to succeed, not withstanding this racist society we live in. today's leadership seems to have flipped this on its head -- don't blame us for anything, and until racism will be vanquished from america. racism is used as an all-purpose explanation for bad black outcomes in this country. i don't think data backs that up. >> let me no
