knowledge into an arrangement with the company google in order to plac its products, google products into your child's classroom does that mean for your child? we know in part because the state of new mexico sued google over this. they alleged was some evidence that they invaded children's prophecy by providing tools for state schools and then using those schools to track students and their activities on their personal electronic devices whe they weren't in school. google new with their kids we'r doing even when they weren't in the classroom. all of that happened without parental consent. rachel, thank you for coming on. we say this before and so many stories, it's amazing it's real but apparently this is. how does that work? >> basically what happens is th way google markets all of its products. they're offered either for free or for a very low price, so google has infiltrated our american schools in just this way. with chrome books, with google ed tech and services so schools are now google's client which means your child is now google' client. what they do is they log these kids into chrome books in the chro

the google classrooms are also areas of concern. we looked to engage young people to see the interest. we had 315 participants, 37 schools represented. you can see here 55% of them came from sfusb high schools. there were seven sfusb middle schools. we've been working with 43 partners to distribute thousands of books and learning kits. there is a tremendous desire from community to do this work, but they want to do it in partnership with the school districts and we want to make sure we're addressing those gaps and we cannot do it in isolation. i would also share what we learned last summer. 1,447 high school students participated in the summer internship. what we've found is a lot of those students needed that money to help support their families. we're not really addressing this comprehensive piece around learning and getting a job or earning extra money or even the ability to learn on the job. we're creating innovative ways to do this. we surveyed 200 young people and all of them said the remote learning or the internships online

besides observing classrooms virtually, i'm bilingual, i've done text support. teachers have done the best they can with googlenslate and things like that, but we have two newcomers who came to our school from outside the u.s. in january of 2020 and so had about a month of schooling before the pandemic hit and so i was teaching those two kids because their teacher didn't necessarily knee how to teach them fractions in spanish, they're fifth graders. and so i think we see a lot of things that were visiblized. i think about elementary school, we do vision and hearing screenings. we can't do that right now. being able to see a kid's physical affect and have those early identifiers of -- for nutrition, for needing a referral, for -- we have several students pre-pandemic, even, who had anxiety and, you know, that's even who had anxiety. and that's to be expected. many kids when they start are scared to go to school and things like that. and i think the longer we're in distance learning, that's the kind of thing we expect to have ripple effects. we president expect to see third and fourth graders with anxiety about
