yesterday in austin, the gop was happier than a gopher in sort dirt.ernor perry, a staunch tea partier who's been known to beat around the succession bush, announcing the new super majority of his republican party in the statehouse has. november gains put them close to it. yesterday, to democrats announced they would switch party, giving them a super majority. the upshot to democrats in texas are now as relevant as the mythical chupacabra. and the second largest state in the union is now a wholly owned subsidiary of the tea party. it means it gets to tackle the texas-sized republican created $25 billion shortfall the state created last year. and this also means an easier path for an ambitious gop social agenda that would crack down on immigrants, restrict abortion, and allow guns on campuses. that will help the economy. republicans also can approve constitutional amendments, such as bans on key provisions of the federal health care overhaul, all without a single democratic vote. to help me envision what a tea party texas will look like in the future, g

two issues that dominated the meeting between the president and gop leaders tuesday. joel brown reports. >> reporter: it was a search for common ground in a divided washington. republicans and the president said it was a good start. >> the president, i think, put his best foot forward and says we realize we've got to produce results. >> i thought that people came to it with a spirit of trying to work together. >> reporter: it was the first face-to-face meeting since the gop's big gains on election day. they won a majority in the house and came close in the senate. boosted by those victories, the party wants a bigger say in washington's agenda, starting with tax cuts. >> we ought to treat all taxpayers the same. >> reporter: they're pushing the white house to make the bush-era tax cuts permanent for all taxpayers. but up until now, the president has resisted. he wants to extend the cuts only for families making less than $250,000. but, after the meeting, he signaled there may be room for compromise. >> i appointed my treasury secretary, tim geithner, and my budget dire

also, what about the gop and its outreach to minority populations? >> number one, there is no question but that the gop continues to need to reach out to minority populations. it needs to reach out to all minorities and particularly to the hispanic minority, the issue of border security has at least raised the specter of some republicans talking anti- hispanic. that is a problem. i'm concerned about that issue and why it is important for republicans to make sure they are reaching out to hispanics on many. iss issues./ culturally, hispanics have a lot in common with republicans. the party needs to reach out and make sure that they are exploiting their philosophy and that is an opportunity for everybody and people get to exceed of their own merits and that should be a huge draw for minorities. i think it can be. republicans need to work at it. with regard to the age demographic, it is an interesting argument that i believe is dead wrong. yes, young people tend to be more liberal or progressive when they are young. i think it cuts the other way. if you
