we were told once he's gone, he would lose his grip on the gop. clearly he hasn't lost his grip on the gop. they're still beholden to him, how come? >> i don't know who told you that. i certainly wasn't expecting that. it was never going to be a clean break. i think there are still a lot of members of congress, despite what they say publicly, who don't care for him. but their voters still passionately do. it's going to be a process. you've made clear that you think this republican civil war is over. i don't necessarily disagree that the trumpists have won the war. but nothing lasts forever in politics and it's silly to together that -- >> okay. >> there are still thoughtful, principled people in congress and i think it's wrong to equate a ben sasse with a marjorie taylor greene. ben sasse has a world view. he has policy, principles that are firmly held and he believes it. he goes to washington to try to get things done. when we say that he's just like marjorie taylor greene, i think that's ridiculous. marjorie taylor greene has no interest -- >> j

or independently of the gop and then go from there.er plurality prefer that approach because it is so hard to start a new party. there are serious barriers there. i also think that the way forward and the consensus that i think is building is that it's not an either or. there can be a new national identity situated on the center right that stands for democracy, truth, decency and reason and all these things, these basic things that are required in any functioning self-government. but that also maybe organizes more formally in particular states where it's more permissive for, say, an additional party. i think most of us or a stronger number of the group desire a new faction more than they do a new party. again, i think it will be some hybrid between the two, most likely. >> according to this recent cnbc economic survey, 74% of republicans -- nearly -- three-quarters, want president trump active in the gop in some way. 48% want him to remain head of the party. given those numbers, how much republican voters still seem to be in love with
