i mean, the gop nomination could be wrapped up by may of next year, and that's when this trial is scheduled to start. i mean, what if donald trump wins the nomination before the trial? how does that play out? i think that's entirely possible. and that trial was scheduled for may before today, before we knew that there were more charges and more defendants. so i think that trial just became a lot more complicated, which means it is going to be delayed even further . so i think we are absolutely looking at a scenario where if the case does go to trial, that the former president is the current nominee, when that happens, and then we have the grand jury in d.c, that's currently hearing evidence about efforts by donald trump to overturn the last election in 2020. do you expect an indictment there? i do. we know that there's been a target letter in that case. many people have been on indictment watch, so to speak. i think at this point it looks like that would be next week based on when the grand jury meets in d.c. but i think that it's very rare to have a target letter that sent and all this evi

this, of course, comes one day after his biggest competition for the gop nomination, ron desantis, overhauled able to gain momentum after this, quote, unquote, momentum? >> reporter: that's certainly his hope he can build a coalition here in iowa which they are zeroing in on after starting in this national campaign. now they are laser focused on iowa and other early states. what we heard from him is his pitch to voters is all about electability. florida governor ron desantis taking his campaign refresh on the road. >> i think it's important you go to the rural counties. we will hit them all. this is probably the easiest way to do it. >> reporter: desantis in the hawkeye state following an overhaul of his campaign. he laid off more than one-third of his staff citing budget concerns as senior campaign officials pledged a, quote, leaner and more insurgent campaign to take on former president trump. campaign officials admitted missteps in fund-raising and messaging. >> what do you think the voters should be taking away from that based on the fact you're asking them to make you the top executive?

to talk to you about the criminal trial dates that leave trump free and clear to lock in the gop nominationpresented. is this a win for him? >> yes, i actually think it is, aaron. and i'm so glad you point that. out because i think some people looked at this and said oh, you know, judge aileen cannon is actually pursuing a reasonable course in the trial, it's going to happen before the election. anyone who is making that observation it is clearly someone who has not followed the primary calendar in the past. think about any presidential election we have experienced. usually by the time the weather starts to get warm, we know who the nominees are. from the two major parties, the fact that this is going to happen in may of 2024, it gives donald trump an opportunity technically to lock up all the votes that he can -- [inaudible] back in time, his mindset, what they called mens rhea in the law. because both cases donald trump's behavior in the years prior demonstrated a proclivity for illegal activity. in the case of classified documents, there is a long history of trump mishandling information

if donald trump has to go to trial before the gop nomination is secured in say march, maybe that impactse is nothing that is in donald trump's way right now and that includes ron desantis. >> it's interesting because that seems to be the strategy of a lot of these candidates maybe kind of say the right things but hope the doj does their work for them and somehow gets trump out of the way but chris christie sees the way the beat trump is to go through him. >> the people in the republican party and quite broadly across america, are tired of having political candidates who are snake oil sales men who just don't tell them the truth. this time in 2015, donald trump was at 4%. so i don't think anybody should be worried about the polling right now. >> so let me ask you what do you make of that strategy? better to go around donald trump or through him? if it's not desantis is it chris christie or perhaps who's not in the race right now like a governor in virginia or georgia or some place like that? >> well, i think the challenge for chris christie is that he's good at punching but it's not reall

trump is that he is able to push some of the trials into next summer if he's already secure the gop nomination, in the political question before the american people but about donald trump's liberty, or best-case an area for donald trump, he pushes all the files off until after next november. >> cynthia, i would like you to comment a little bit on this process that david raised. but i also want to get your reaction to what is happening, what came out of arizona this week. a lot of focus has been, of course, on watching fulton county down in georgia, with baited breath, waiting for fani willis and her team to take action. but it did come as a bit of a shock the decisions out of arizona. what do you make of the attorney general's actions there as well? >> two things. the first is that we have the scheduling conference that is coming up in the mar-a-lago case, which will determine -- should set some form of a trial date, which will affect the political scheduling, which will affect the timing of the trial in the primary schedule. and my guess would be that judge aileen cannon sets the trial data s

and jonathan, there was polls out there, man, they are showing the gop nomination. trump's to lose. you know, the general election is a different ball game here. so, what is your thoughts on the republican base, understanding that sticking with trump actually means they're not going to win against biden next year. >> michael, i don't know that's what it means. i mean, this is the terrifying part, right? will hurd makes the argument that the reason republicans have to move away from trump's because if they nominate trump, he will lose. that would be nice to think. i would like to think that nominating a guy who's been indicted twice will be indicted again would lead to him losing. right, now trump is running five points ahead of where he was in 2020 against biden. look at the polling average. he is right about even with biden. i am absolutely not convinced that even a trump under criminal indictment is a surefire loser against biden. because the electoral college, i think he's got like a 35 to 40% floor on his chances, no matter what. and that's what's really scary. what we need, we

just pivot and ask you about a different topic here, another governor, who is running for the gop nominationnorth dakota governor, also a billionaire businessman. listen to his response when he asked if he would do business with trump. >> would you ever do business with donald trump? >> i don't think so. >> why? >> i just think that it's important that you're judged by the company you keep. >> you wouldn't do business with him? >> no, i wouldn't. >> he seemed to be careful with his words there. do you think this is something that could hit trump given trump's identity as a businessman? >> no, because none of these fis have the guts to go after trump and highlight all the people who have been damaged by donald trump's business dealings. this includes in 2016 when the democrats didn't make an issue in the general election. so someone's got to go straight out and go after him on this issue. and right now, none of the republican challengers seem to want to be able to do it. later that same interview, ana, he said he would vote for trump and trying to assuage the base. i think elise has it right,

i'm surprised by that across-the-board these candidates for the gop nomination they need to have objectivity. point out things to the american people what really doesn't matter being objective and the fact donald trump legal issues are going to be a problem. here's why they are the better candidate they need to put that forward for people to understand and get on board with. eric: let's look at the seven of qualified we have their pictures of course former president donald trump of course. do not know if he's going to show, nikki haley, desantis, vivek ramaswamy, senator scott, krista, nor the kota governor, , who has the most to gain and do you think? on the debate stage and what viewers should be looking at. >> tim scott will really thrive in this setting. nikki haley, she is always ready with her facts and data and ready to go. i think chris christie will certainly target trump whether he's on the stage you will point out the issues there. i think others may take his cues and join him. again like i said before they need to take a step away from the donald trump lane if they have any chanc

it's another reason why he's a clear frontrunner, not only in the gop nomination but a poll came outr the weekend, he's leading biden by a large margin. in the last election cycle the polls showed trump even or down a point. he was down in all the national a polls. he has moved dramatically. look, where is the off ramp now? >> by the way, it's not like we went into this conflict expecting to win, intending to win. you have never heard president biden talking about winning this war and everything that we have done has been a step or two steps behind, right. we finally send them tanks months after they demanded tanks and that might have made a difference. the tanks aren't even there yet. it's really -- it's an offensive and -- vietnam, the parallels are very real. no will to win. no plan to win. endless funding and destruction on the other end. we have to decide here whether we want to actually come out on top on this and stop putin. i disagree with you a little bit in that he already has invaded other countries in europe. he has shown i'm self to be a danger to other countries in euro
