gordon chang. >> this certainly represents progress. we're much further down the road than i thought for instance 48 hours ago. most people were surprised how far we've gotten. we are not as far as we should have been with their first summit with kim jong un. that solidified his role at home. it was one of the main reasons he wanted to meet president trump. we could have probably gotten more. the important thing when you look at it in broader and is essentially this starts a long process. ensure the u.s. will apply a lot of pressure to get this done. i'm optimistic that we'll will actually get to a point where the north koreans won't have ballistic missiles, won't have nukes. we look at the accounting and have verification. ne of the things that struck you that were discussed during the commercial break during the press conferences mis testing. let's lk about that for a moment because i worri you. >> certainly. the other thing that worries me is stopping of the military exercises. we do those to maintain reads. we don't have readiness c

gordon chang is with me. we want this to work. there have been so many moving parts and a lot of unpredictability. what do you think that letter signifies to the president and what do you think it says? >> i don't think the letter says i'm going to give up all my nukes and you can inspect me til kingdom comes. they promised quote-unquote denuclearization. but when trump and kim meet, kim gets a big win because he solidifies his regime. those pictures of kim and trump will be seen for decades if the regime survivors. kennedy: you are right, this very well could be -- although this an interesting presidency and busy presidency, and the news cycle works so quickly, this could be a defining moment. that meeting -- nowadays we only pause for a moment and wait for the next crisis. but there is something significant about this. for those who doubt the president and feared we were on the brink of a third world war. what do you they will those people about this process and how do we get the most of out of it? >> i think we get the most of

gordon chang is here. what do you think of some of the president's word about kim jong-un. do you think he really trusts the leader of north korea. >> i don't think so. president trump has this america first notion. meansvery country itself. you just assume other countries are not trustworthy and their leaders will lie to you because they will defend their own interests. some of the language from president trump is a little over the top. especially with kim jong-un, a family that has been horrific for decade. but i think kim jong-un, murderous dictator gets one president trump said hehanged. one shot to do this. maybe he'll and we'll be pleasantly surprised. kennedy: we still don't have a lot of details on what this deal means what they signed. do you feel given what you know so the u.s. has given too many concessions? >> i think so. trump being trump, he put the s. in a good position up until last week. last week trump being trump gave away and squandered that lead. this summit is important to kim jong-un. it legitimized him, and it really was the prize for him. for us it

. >>> my panel of experts joins me gordon chang, let me start with the u.s. has not been able to get any preliminary agreement ahead of the talks as you know better than most. usually all of the diplomatic work or a lot is done ahead of time. how concerning is that as we look ahead to the summit? are these two nations anywhere near close tonything they could agree upon? >> actually, i don't think so, jake. if you go back a month or so, u.s. officials say there was going to be no summit unless the north koreans would give a firm commitment to the united states to abandon the weapons program. and now we have a very different tone from the administration. not only from the president, but also secretary of state mike pompeo which is basically we're building a relationship. well, when that meeting occurs in a few ho we give north korea something really important, legit hiation, that solidifies his regime back home and makes it difficult to get any deal with north so you have to believe some of the air has gone out of our efforts to get the north koreans to give up
