let's bring in gordon chang, author of "the coming collapse of china.", sounds pretty good. we loved -- if we had 6.6% growth here, we would be dancing in the streets for them it's a negative story how bad is it? >> it's not 6.6. >> you think those numbers are fudged >> a university professor in beijing last month created a sensation across china when he said, look, the economy is either contracting or growing no more than 1.67%. you start looking at some of the underlying indicators. it does look like in december the economy was contracting and we're going to see even it slow further in the next several months for a number of other factors. right now china is at that zero level. maybe a little bit above maybe a little bit elow. it's certainly not growing 6.6 >> i want to get that straight because what you are suggesting is an economics professor at a leading chinese university came out and basically said the chinese government's numbers are 5% off >> yes that's exactly -- >> that's bold, and, by the way, that's brave >> it is brave, but a lot of people

joining us now is gordon chang author of the book "the coming collapse of china". who here has the upper hand? china or the u.s.? >> we do, david. look, if you look at china's recently released trade statistics, china's trade surplus with the u.s. last year was 91.9% of its overall merchandise trade surplus. that does not include this shipments through hong kong. when we get those numbers from the u.s. commerce department, that means the surplus with the u.s. will be more than 100% of china's overall merchandise trade surplus. chinese economy in december looks like it's contracting from all the initial numbers. they are really hurting, david. they have also got problems in their political system. i could go on, but you get the point. >> the dni, the director of national intelligence gave testimony before the congress yesterday. one of the things that was in this report talked about more cooperation between the russians and the chinese, militarily and especially as it relates to countering us. i think that's something that's been around for a while. but for some rea

bring in china expert gordon chang.ll start there, gordon, significant of talks, do you see it with beijing? >> shows north koreans are vasels to the chinese. kim jong-un has gone to chinese soil four straight times. xi xinping despite a lot of promises has not fon to north korea. this indicates that china controls this relationship. we're not talking about hostility between the north koreans and chinese. a lot of people mention that now we can see north koreans just do what the chinese want. connell: does that mean it is separated from the trade talks, as opposed to being used as leverage by either side? >> i think chichi is using it as leverage. he run out of ammo on trade. what he can only do, say to trump i can control kim jong-un. help me on trade. i will help you on north korea. connell: that is one of the original arguments. it was kind of put to the sideline. in terms of the deal or structure of talks, we keep hering that that progress is being made. fear from hard-liners, that both sides have pressure in their

the selling author gordon chang who's leery of any report we get out of that country.want to get your sense of whether that would make even a trade deal tough to benefit from. what's your sense? >> i think it's difficult to have a good trade deal with a weak china. xi jinping the chinese ruler has been talking about self sufficient deed. the idea when you have trade you have to believe in comparative advantage. that's the principle that underlies the global trading system. china doesn't believe in that. one self-sufficiency. on the other hand i don't know if you can have a good trade deal with a strong china either. the chinese system right now makes it extremely difficult to have good trade relations. right now it's a hard time for us. >> i'm wondering when it comes to china and how we deal with it, the new act in pentagon chief has been repeatedly saying china is its biggest worry. he said china, china, china. that does sort of echo some musings despite his high praise for xi jinping. what you make of that? is the administration pivoting here in a military sense comm

gordon chang. that is pretty in-your-face to say hey, we hope to have a deal.ing here, but don't keep shifting blame for your problems. >> i think the main problem is china each year steals hundreds of billions of dollars. >> they never did that. >> and we've got a lot of that. they don't even want that to be a subject. >> when you look at micron how the net chips stolen, you just multiply that across the sector. either by force taking her out right up to deprive the u.s. of innovation. we increasingly have an innovation-based economy. if we can't commercialize that, we don't have a first world economy. the vice president and other chinese officials have got to acknowledge that it is they are not willing to do so. >> a lot of people talk about the president's tactics, to in-your-face in this approach is long overdue. we can argue whether this is the right way to go, but if he gets results, if he gets a commitment to buy more goods and even gets them to bend a little bit on stealing stuff from us, we just have because they don't do that, then what? >> that's a g
