i had the privilege of reading a copy of gordon chang's book, and that was a book i was so drawn into that i read the whole thing in one weekend. it's an astonishing story, a set of stories about the chinese experience and the railroads. so i hope you are finding yourselves motivated to go back to some of these scholarly sources with an open mind and look at them in a new way. what i'm going to talk about today is how the building of the transcontinental railroad and the southern pacific railroad enabled the great fortune that created stanford university, but also how the memory of the railroad, the myth, the legend of the railroad shape to the university and its culture. and what that means for us today , if we accept that the loans were never repaid and that it was a swindle and that the whole thing rests on this paper mountain of unpaid debts to the american taxpayer. what does that mean for us when we are thinking about the railroad legacy at stanford? that is what i will be talking about. and i have beautiful, historical photos because of the internet. it is so easy to get them n
