are there issues of character that distinguish you from vice president gore? >> the man loves his wife and i appreciate that a lot. and i love mine. the man loves his family a lot, and i appreciate that, because i love my family. i think the thing that discouraged me about the vice president was uttering those famous words, "no controlling legal authority." i felt like there needed to be a better sense of responsibility of what was going on in the white house. i believe that -- i believe they've moved that sign, "the buck stops here" from the oval office desk to "the buck stops here" on the lincoln bedroom. it's not good for the country and it's not right. we need to have a new look about how we conduct ourselves in office. there's a huge trust. i see it all the time when people come up to me and say, i don't want you to let me down again. and we can do better than the past administration has done. it's time for a fresh start. it's time for a new look. startime for a fresh after a season of cynicism. and so i don't know the man well, but i've been disappointed

gore was a no know-it-all. the kind of boy who would remind the teacher that she forgot to give homework. he says likability is a minor factor. jimmy carter's unlikebility was the higher of democrats even those his job approval was low. reagan's likability in 1980 was the lowest among republicans. he compares that jfk and reagan revealed charisma after they had been elected. what do you think? is it likability or the economy this year with obama? >> well i think it is ult maltly the economy. having said that, you can't have a candidate who is so unlikable that people won't pay atengt to what he says. however, i think what is really important and in modern times where we have seen candidates trip up is not so much likability but when it appears they don't know who they are and when they keep trying to reinvent themselves. i think given what romney was able to accomplish in his convention last week, he add least appears to know who he is and is trying to let people into the private side of him. which is something

what is gore doing? >> also, in 2000 george w.y good line and i'll read it to you. it goes, "i'm beginning to think not only did he invent the internet, but he invented the calculator as well. it's fuzzy math." now, were all these moments just fun, or do they have a real impact on votes? >> i think this one goes to the narrative of the bush campaign was running. al gore had said -- he never said i invented the internet. he said while in congress i took the initiative in creating the internet, saying he worked at it. the bush people have turned it into saying you invented the intbt. you're a boaster and bragger. this joke just furthers that narrative, and it's funny. comedy is a great way of endearing yourself to the audience. it builds a connection with people. people are laughing and smiling and like watching you. it's a great tool to use, and that was a funny moment. also, i think bush is bad at math, so what he is talking about is fudzy math, and he is saying he can't really add. >> i'm going to do some math here and tell you t

al gore and i can do better.e has raised taxes on the people driving pickup trucks and lowered taxes on the people driving limousines. we can do better. he promised to balance the budget, but he hasn't even tried. in fact, the budget he has submitted to congress nearly doubled the debt. even worse, he wasted billions and reduced our investments in education and jobs. we can do better. so if you are sick and tired of a government that doesn't work to create jobs, if you're sick and tired of a tax system that's stacked against you, if you're sick and tired of exploding debt and reduced investments in our future, or if, like the great civil rights pioneer, fannie lou hamer, you're just plain old tired of being sick and tired -- [cheers and applause] -- join us, work with us, win with us, and we can make our country the country it was meant to be! [laughter] i met al gore while i was working on the night and i said to him, i said to him, -- and he had read too close to call, and i had said, i am writing another book where bush and gore at the center of it. and i said, i think i am the biggest bush and gore junkie in the world, and he said you might be summoned. [laughter] you know, i think he has a point. i have to agree. but anyway, i don't want to spend too much time on bush and gore today, but that he had a not predictable, at least for me, i'm not very good at predictions from, as you may know, we will be getting to that a little bit later, the legacy of the supreme court. as you know, i think you all know, bush won that. but the court from 2000 until 2005, they moved to the left. the court are more liberal. the same non-justices. -- the same nine justice. the end of the death penalty, they decided that gay people can no longer be thrown in prison fo

when you ask the american people they said gore won two out of three.ow did bush do against kerry? republicans say this democrats say that. oh, hell no. john kerry 52-39 won the first one, won the second one, and won the last one 53-47. so george bush got his ass kicked in five out of the six debates he was in. and the media painted him as the victor. and what happened in the next debate. debate number three another crushing victory 56-30. so in fact at it out of the last nine presidential debates have been won by democrats. in fact a great majority of the debates since 1960 have been won by democrats. do you hear that from the media? no, it's all even. it's not even. look at the numbers after the debates. the democrats are still going to play it safe. and so a spokesperson said the only way he could lose is if he fell off of the stage. she probably should haven't said that, but it reminded me of the one time that a candidate did actually fall off of the stage.
