and luke's gospel. and they contain some similar incidents and some different incidents. so, in matthew's gospel, joseph is, perhaps, the leading figure. it's joseph who receives the message from the angel. on the other hand, when we come to luke's gospel, joseph is scarcely mentioned at all, the attention is all on mary and on mary's family. "the book of the genealogy of jesus christ, the son of david, the son of abraham. abraham was the father of isaac and isaac the father of jacob and jacob the father of judah and his brothers." jesus' family history was very important to his followers. both gospel writers provide us with a detailed genealogy, dating back hundreds of years. but rather than being a literal guide to jesus' ancestors, they contain a message as to who they believe jesus really was -- the long-awaited jewish messiah. herr: first of all, amongst several peoples, genealogies per se are important -- it's part of your past. you should know where you come from as well as where you are headed t

the gnostic gospels are gospels of wisdom. the new testament gospels care about salvation from sin.tion from ignorance. the new testament gospels look to stimulate faith. the gnostic gospels look to stimulate knowledge and insight. >> gnosticism held a fascination for many christians for another reason. its gospels seemed to offer a more female-friendly faith. >> it was the gnostics that thought the role of the female as an image and the role of women within the church should be advanced so that god is not only male, god is also female. there are not only male leaders, there are female leaders. there are not only male priests, there are female priests, and in this way, there is a kind of gender balance found in these texts. >> that balance is not found in the gnostic gospel of thomas, where peter asks jesus to send mary magdalene on her way, for women aren't worthy of apostolic life. >> and jesus replies, "leave her alone for i shall make her a male, for every woman who becomes a male will enter into the kingdom of god." this isn't a very liberating view of women, and not one i thin

john's gospel, though, has a different slant on things. in his gospel, there's no simon of cyrene. jesus carries the crossbeam himself all the way through john's narrative. jesus is a magisterial, sovereign figure who needs no help from anybody else. today, when christian pilgrims process through jerusalem along the via dolorosa, they're following a route only established in the 18th century. archaeologist dr. shimon gibson believes the real route that jesus was forced to take to his execution was very different. man: well, the traditional via dolorosa begins at the antonia fortress, which is on the north of the temple mount area, and then it winds its way through the streets of jerusalem to the area of the church of the holy sepulchre of today. from the area of the antonia all the way towards the southwest. we're here in the opposite direction. we're at the praetorium, the old palace of herod the great. as i said, most scholars accept that this is the historical location, which means the via dolorosa has to begin at this point. in fact, this is probably the point where the ecce ho

what happen to the last gospel or is it still there? it's actually the first gospel, isn't it? >> exactly. that is one of the changes that happened when they changed the order of mass. one thing that the bishops wanted was to take out all the extra things. things that were supposed to be minor, suddenly took great importance. such like the last gospel was something that the priest was to say to himself. but suddenly it took on all this importance. there were laminated cards. and they suddenly felt that wasn't part of the mass. and they did get rid of it and like the prayer at the foot of the alter. that is something that we don't need everyone to do. >> 20 seconds, tell us what the greatest thing about this? >> it makes people realize what we're doing. it wakes people up. >> all right. we'll take a break and we'll be back on mosaic. be out there! be out there!
