now going to preach the gospel in nova scotia. i think it's in his work he takes up the american revolution and half of a sentence in a fairly long word. then david george's account of his remarkable experience as a slave in south carolina. a liberated loyalist in nova scotia and pioneering settler in sierra leone. david george's memoir is interesting because he, too, was a biblically drenched bibically infused person who applied standard metaphors but in the reverse order. britain was moses. the new america was egypt from which he had been liberated. and then in the best known work of the period the interesting life of the african published in 1789 relating the life of the preceding 30 years, my wife and i counted that the bible references more than one a page and there is, again, about a half paragraph on the american revolution. only with the poems that phyllis wheatley did the pattern deviate but then only a little. the great majority these narratives described how a word or words from scripture brought spiritual life healing

we're going to use the gospel this morning. the beauty is living together with women with all different experiences, different kinds of wisdom from the age that they are and being able to share that together in prayer in the morning. >> what has been the most difficulty part of this process for you? >> just being a younger cente center -- younger sister in a world of older sisters. there are very few 28-year-olds surrounded all the time by people in their 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s. there's a lot of sickness and death. people who are coming to the end of their life, whereas i'm just coming into mine full steam ahead. >> i wonder, you know, how they do it. they do it well. they seem to fit in easily. i think baudz there's something deeper than just the companionship. >> 91-year-old sister joan mir yam jones sees the small surge of women in her congregation as a welcome surprise. things are different now from the time she became a sister at age 19. >> now the young people are actually much older than that. what do you think of that? >

but when you're talking about weaving in pop, jazz and gospel, how tough of a thread was that to needle? >> well, the beauty of the culture whose lens this story is being told through is there's so many different parts of it. each type of music deals with the joy, deals with the loss, deals with the recovery. and so where something that's traditional musical theater might have a little more solemn town, the gospel is the >> les a lot of uplift -- there's a lot of uplift and joy in this music. >> sort of christmas carol meets black nativity. >> oh, okay. that's a nice little mix there. was there an aha moment for you? were there any sort of personal inspiration when you took this idea to lelund? >> yeah, actually is. lelund and i worked on a piece called emancipation. he did the incidental music for that show and he, essentially, saved that show with what he was able to bring to the -- to it. and at that point it was like we've got to figure out how to do something together. and he said, well, i've got the perfect formula. let's bring in jason michael webb. and jason, he's humble, but hi
