gottlieb. this december will mark the two year anniversary of the 21st century cures act being signed into law by president obama. is to advance the discovery and development of new treatments, cures to increased research and approval process. this up in law supported medical research initiatives like the cancer moon shot initiative, the all of us research program and the brain initiative. it also provides money to fda to advance the agencies mission and implement policies and underlying bills. congressr committee in is putting these investments to work to find cures for our greatest medical issues. the nih was provided for in a billion dollars in new funding and advanced cutting edge research initiatives. the fda was provided $500 million over 10 years to improve medical product reviews. in addition to this much-needed funding, there are many provisions in this package worthy of support from facilitating the development of new antibiotics to fighting the uses to advancing of modern trial desig

jenny now is scott gottlieb. thank you -- joining me now is scott gottlieb.y for joining me. talk to me about this new guidance. scott: what we announced this week is is a series of new guidance talks we are going to be issuing a rethink is going to lay out a more efficient pathway project developers to bring medications to market that treat pain. previously we had guidance laid out in a document that we issued in 2014. that document is outdated and laid out a pathway to markets that we think was too burdensome and it discouraged investment. these new guidance documents, the goal is to be more focused and allow the developers to develop drugs for specific kinds of pain. also allow them to seek indications -- if you can demonstrate that your pain drug conspiracy use of opioids, you can get -- on the basis of the claim. alix: opioid use might be slowing but the drugs you use to get off opioids is picking up. how do you measure success? scott: is a great question. -- it is a great question. we see prescribing going down in the medical setting. at the same time,
