scott gottlieb, and he joins us from west port, connecticut. good morning to you, doctor.s you know, covid presents many challenges, many of them also technical for live television. so we hope to continue that conversation in a moment. but i'm really glad you're here to answer some of these outstanding questions. on the shear numbers alone, the c.d.c. is predicting about 75,000 more deaths during the first week of january. how much are christmas gatherings going to add to the strain we are seeing on the system right now? >> doctor: we saw a spike coming out of thanksgiving. if you look at the analysis done on a state by state basis, there was anywhere from a 10% to 40% increase in cases. some of that was just the shear magnitude of the virus building. but some of that was a consequence of the gatherings as well, which affected mo more cases. pobably the peak in the number of infections is probably around the first week in january. so we have three more weeks in increasing infections, we'll see a peak in infections and then start to see a decline. but the health care system

we played scott gottlieb talking about it just now. but i'm also told by a source that pfizer did offer multiple times for the administration to buy into more doses and the white house declined. what is the white house saying about this? >> reporter: the white house, as you said, is denying they passed up the chance to buy the additional doses. not only does scott gottlieb publicly confirm they did offer them, you have your source as well but moncef slouie indicating he defended the decision not to buy and it wouldn't be reasonable given the candidates we were looking at, it wouldn't have been reasonable to take that process. here's a tip, if the white house is telling you one thing and scott gottlieb and moncef and sl slouie slouie is telling you another thing, believe them. it's possible if you get astrazeneca and the johnson & johnson vaccine also approved for emergency use within a few weeks we may have among all those candidates enough to vaccinate everyone. we don't know if it was a mistake, but we do know they turned down the op

commissioner scott gottlieb, and he joins us from west port, connecticut.ood morning to you. >> doctor: good morning. >> brennan: i want to start on the big picture. you forecasted last week we're not going to see peak hospitalizations for at least six weeks. the c.d.c. director put a more dire timeline on that, saying 60 to 90 days, and we'll have more deaths than on 9/11 or pearl harbor. how do you save lives at this point? >> doctor: the pressure is going to be on the health care system. they're not going to see peaks burdened on hospital resources probably until mid-january or late january. you're seeing some hopeful signs around the nation in terms of a slowing of new cases in the west and midwest. but you're seeing an acceleration in the east coast and the west country. so the entire country is not going through this pandemic at the same time. new york and california, califoa were a little later to have acceleration in cases, so they'll be later to peak. sometimes there is a slowing of cases in the parts of the country that were hit first, particularl

but a backdrop here is new reporting, and you played that important clip from scott gottlieb, the formerda commissioner under president trump, also a board member on pfizer saying that on multiple occasions the trump administration passed up the opportunity to purchase additional doses of the pfizer vaccine, even according to gottlieb after there were preliminary results showing real promise for that. so the u.s. would wind up buying 100 million vaccines which means it's enough to vaccinate 50 million people because every person needs to get two shots with the pfizer vaccine. the eu, the european union for its part got 200 million vaccines and pfizer has said it may not be until july until they can provide additional doses to the united states. so even as the president will make this statement prioritizing america first as it relates to the vaccine and its distribution, the decision not to purchase additional dosages from pfizer really is putting some countries in other parts of the world ahead of the united states. >> peter, do we have an idea of how many companies, though, we have comm

even in the words of gottlieb, after there were initial promising results associated with it. so the u.s. ended up buying about 100 million of these doses, which is good to vaccinate about 50 million people, because of course it's two doses you'll need for full vaccines treatment for visits. for comparison, the european union purchased 200 million doses. so right now, as the u.s. is now seeing these promising results likely to be approved, emergency use approval authorization later this week, it may be not until june before the u.s. is able to purchase more of that vaccine, because so much of it has been snapped up by those other foreign countries to this point. the white house pushes back on this, they insist it's false, they say that the white house is in negotiation with multiple agreements with many different vaccine manufacturers right now. but it does raise a lot of questions even as the president today is going to sort of have a victory lap of sorts before the process is even begun here about how effective the effort has been and whether the strategy was smart from the

you wrote an op-ed with form scott gottlieb, former fda commissioner. you told the covid antibody drugs sitting on the shelf, more than 80% of the supply unused. what is going on the treatment side what can we do about it? >> this is a challenge of health care providers having a lot to do at the same time dealing deah the pandemic connell. a million doses of man-made antibodies, same kind of antibodies that you make when you give vaccine, gives you immunity, neutralizes the virus, keeps you from getting serious consequences when you're infected, they can be given. there are very promising studies. the evidence is limited. i think it is pretty important for people who are at high-risk, those over 65, those with chronic conditions, if they get covid, getting treated with these new antibodies before their condition progresses very much. think about what president's trump experience was. he got early version of the antibody treatment. it does look like it is substantially reduces risks of emergency room visits or hospitalizations. the problem is that in ord

wrote an op-ed in "the wall street journal" with a former -- fellow former fda commissioner scott gottlieb and you're calling for the increased use of antibody treatment. we've been so obsessed, rightfully so, with the distribution of this vaccine in the last two weeks that i want to get a better idea, what drugs are you talking about and for what purpose? >> ali, we've been rightfully focused on vaccines. this is tremendously good news. that's the way to control the virus over time. but right now we're also living through a very big and unprecedented surge in cases. and what the monoclonal antibodies do, these are essentially man-made antibodies that give to you, to patients who have been exposed to covid, have covid in the early stages, that antibodies of a vaccine would normally make you produce on your own. this is kind of a bridge to a vaccine for people who are at very high risk of complications. the challenge is it's a new treatment. it takes some new steps to get it available for widely and we are seeing a big mismatch between the amount of monoclonal antibodies available and the a
