gottlieb was talking about was for example, a single or combination of direct antiviral drugs.e have a major program that we've initiated in both the development of and the discovery of drugs that can directly inhibit the virus. i would be rather certain that within a reasonable period of time, we will have drugs that will be able to treat the coronavirus, the sars cov-2. the reason that's important is that when people get severe disease, it usually is virus that goes from the upper airway, which is the point at which the virus enters the body, to other organs, particularly the lung. so when you look at serious disease, people who get hospitalized, people who require advanced treatments such as intubation and mechanical ventilation, that almost invariably relates to the virus having gone to disseminate and go to the lung. when we get and if i say when, because it's not just going to be if, it's going to be when, when we get drugs that will be able to block that, you're going to see a lot more people not advance from the early stage to the advanced stage of disease. so in that p

gottlieb, thank you for joining me, sir.et to your response to the cdc director rochelle walensky, given the evidence you have seen, is a booster shot absolutely necessary at this point? what do you make of the eligibility pool that's been widened for the third dose? >> i also sit on the board of pfizer, as you know. i think the evidence is clear for older individuals there's a decline in vaccine efficacy over time, particularly for people who are vaccinated a long interval again. the advisory came that people over the age of 65 should receive a booster. cdc came out in a similar place. you can make an argument the data suggests people 65 and above, and possibly 50 and above. they defined that as the age criteria upon which people should be received boosters. the broadened eligibility for people who are occupational exposures or people at high risk with underlying conditions, that's consistent. it largely conformed to the fda decision. the cdc director intervened to break what was largely a tie. a close vote on whether or no

gottlieb, sure, some people have been fired for not complying. i understand that. but these numbers, they're factual, these are the numbers. the mandates have increased vaccinations. they just simply have. so do you think we should see more of them? >> look, there's no question they're working to increase the vaccination rates. first of all, we should take a step back and look at what we've achieved. 78% of adults have had at least one dose, most will complete the series. that's a remarkable achievement for a vaccine that's been largely voluntary. if we were dealing with one of the variants, the wuhan variants, b.1.1.7, if we had 78% vaccinated that probably would be enough to provide a wall of immunity. the only reason we need to reach higher from a public health standpoint is we're dealing with a delta variant, a far more contagious variant. i think the federal government is well within their prerogative to mandate vaccination among the federal workforce. that's an issue of federal readiness. i think we should be mandating vaccination among other groups like the

scott gottlieb that we're doing all we can to get vaccines to children in the fall.the meantime, use masking and other measures to keep our children safe and reassure parents that help is on the way and the form of vaccines for children under 12. >> brennan: for parents, what do they need to look for in their children? are you seeing these infections develop in the form of some of these syndromes, like miss-c? who is ending up sick in your hospitals and how sick are they? >> doctor: in addition to prevention, margaret, we need to continue to emphasize to all parents and families the importance of timely diagnosing through testing. once the child is displaying symptoms, respiratory symptoms that could be consistent with covid, covid pneumonia, fever, it could be shortness of breath and other symptoms. and then triage the care appropriately. decide whether that child needs hospital-based care. we know how to treat children at this point in the pandemic. we know that more than 98% are due to the delta variant, highly contagious, but we're able to take care of these chil

gottlieb, thank you very much. listen, i appreciate you joining us.hink it's important for our leaders to show people that they are comfortable getting the vaccine and the booster as well. so listen, president biden getting his third dose in public today. how important is it to show people that the booster is safe and it's effective? because there has been a lot of confusion about the boost errolout. should everyone eligible be seeking out a booster? >> yeah, look, i think it was very important for the president to do this in public. and he made a statement about the population that is eligible to receive the booster. i certainly think anyone over the age of 65 and those who live in long-term care facilities should seek out a booster shot. that's the age group that the cdc and fda agreed on should be going to get boosters right now. for those under the age of 65, the authorization allows for people who have medical risks as well as those who have excessive occupational exposure that could put them at risk of severe covid that could include health care

scott gottlieb is with us. his new book "uncontrolled spread" is out tomorrow.ll us about it. >> well, look, the data is encouraging. it's going to be submitted to the fda very quickly. and subject to the fda's careful review of vaccine for children ages 5 to 11 could be available as soon as the end of october. this was a study in about 2200 children across five different countries. 90 different clinical trial sites examining of ten microgram dose. that's one-third the dose being used in the adult population in children over the age of 12. advisor evaluated three different doses. three different strains. and the reason they settled on this ten microgram dose is it struck the best balance between a robust immune response, antibody levels with less vaccine related side effects like arm pain and fever. so the company wanted to find a dose that would be tolerable in young kids while still providing adequate efficacy. efficacy on par with what we were seeing in the older populations. hopefully this dose strikes that balance. fda has to make a careful review. assuming

gottlieb said at the top of the segment where he see as rise in cases coming from the northeast, butully, has peaked in some cases where it's surged. given us a broad overview of where the nation stands right now in terms of the pandemic and what we could see in the weeks and months ahead as the weather gets colder, which traditionally, of course, helps virus spread in. >> i think one of the challenges with the pandemic, is it's so difficult to tell how things are going to play out in the next couple of months. it's unclear what's going to happen in the u.s. as dr. gottlieb said in that clip, you have schools reopening and the north and northeast tha as hard by the southern states are so it might start to peek in the north and northeast more than it has in the summer. it's unclear whether it will spread, slow down, or whether another variant will emerge. there's concern headed into the fall. we've heard officials say they worry that the country is in for a lot of hurt over the next few months, especially as people move inside, with school reopenings, colder weather and the challenge

scott gottlieb, a former fda commissioner and a member of pfizer's board and author of the new book " spread condition why covid-19 crushed us and how we can plan ahead." what we just heard t data could be submitted in a matter of days for kids 5 to 11. are you still sticking with that same time line that we could see the first shots in arms in those kids for that age group by halloween? >> hello, look. think think that that's right. the doctor said the application could go in this week. that suggests the company could get it in this week. the fda has said previously the review is going to be a matter of weeks, not months. having been with the agency, i would interpret that to mean it's a four- or six-week review. you could have the vaccine available by the end of the month, end of october. if it slips a little bit, it could be november event. that's the time frame we're looking at. assuming it all goes well, i feel confident having been briefed on it. it's going to be up to the fda and their independent assessment of that package. >> we as you know, dr. gottlieb v been watching new i

scott gottlieb and a member of pfizer's board of directors.fda and the white house. is there science to back up the need for the booster or did the white house get a little bit ahead of themselves? how can you explain that? >> i don't think the white house got ahead of themselves. they had to back into some kind of deadline. they didn't need to put out a date but approximate time frame when boosters would be available. you have to put in place logistics to deliver them if you do it in nursing homes. it could take weeks to get that in place. there is clear evidence the boosters can benefit some portion of the population. debate within the fda and cdc today will be what population can benefit the most from boosters. if you look at the data coming out of israel collecting good data seems to show people above the age of 60 vaccinated a long interval ago benefit from boosters with reduction in infection and cases of severe infection. there is a population for whom these shots could benefit. >> dana: what about side effects from a third shot, a boos
