gottlieb talked about the pandemic being over, but he added the caveat, at least as far as america isglobal pandemic. according to "the new york times," over 51% of the global population has been vaccinated. if we look at how the data breaks down, the u.s. and canada are at 68% with at least one dose, europe is at 60%, only 8.7% of the population of africa is partially vaccinated, one dose at least. so as long as this uneven distribution continues, do we have any chance of ending what is a global pandemic? >> i think we declared mission accomplished back in may, june or so, far too early. and i hope we learned from the experience with the delta variant that as long as you allow the virus to spread anywhere in the world, new variants, which are more infectious, potentially more virulent, can emerge elsewhere and threaten our own recovery. right now in this country, it looks like we may be at the beginning of a new resurgence. we are about three to four weeks behind europe. they tend to predict -- their patterns tend to predict what we see here and they are seeing a resurgence. the numb

gottlieb says. let me explain right now, you have the recommendation and the authorization to give boosts, namely the third shot to people who have an mrna vaccine and the second shot for those with j&j but as for people 65 years of age or older, those with underlying conditions, and those who work in or live in an area with a high risk what dr. gottlieb is saying is that people, when they see that, they get confused as do i or do i not fall into that group for the elderly, it's easy you know you fall into that group. and those are the ones we clearly want to get -- get the booster right away but what he is referring to -- and i quite agree with him -- that as long as you get a safety signal that you don't have any red flags of safety, i have always been, right from the beginning, always yielding to safety to make sure. been one who feels that you should get no ambiguity, get the confusion out of the way anybody 18 or older should get the booster shot now, to their credit, the fda is looking at that

gottlieb is right.nk we are looking ahead to about six to eight weeks of difficult times in the united states. we have about 80,000 infections a day right now. that's actually up a little bit in the last couple of weeks. i expect those numbers to rise in the upcoming week, especially with thanksgiving and the christmas holidays that are coming. i do think january will be better, but the next couple of months are going to be pretty tough. >> so, with the holidays upon us, what would your advice be to everyone to sort of avoid the six to eight weeks alie ahead of us and the problems that many people experience in those times? >> number one is absolutely for people to get vaccinated. if you're not vaccinated, if your kids are not vaccinated, it is safe to get together over the holidays if you're vaccinated. it is much, much riskier if you are not. if you're more than six months out from your vaccine, get a booster shot. those are widely available, and they offer another level of protection. and then just b

scott gottlieb of the f.d.a. and doctor lawrence from georgetown who is a professor of global health law. the professor and i talked about how mandates, they could erode trust in public health. when you make people do something that they don't want to do. but at some point, they may also be essential for the public's health. how do you reconcile that? i think that this is the point that we are at now. we know that vaccine requirements including in the workplace do work. we have seen entities like tyson's foods reach over 96% of all their employees being vaccinated. we saw united airlines after instituting their vaccine requirements that they were able to get to the high 90's percentile. and thinks that having the vaccine requirement is recruiting advantage. it signals to potential employees they care about worker safety. there is a real reason why vaccine requirements are needed. but we also don't have to recognize the mill risk that that might entail. and do i worry just there are long-term effects to public hea

gottlieb, it's good to see you. it seems every day we are winning this battle.l with things it seems we are seeing headlines about concerning rises not only in the northeast, throughout the north and germany and belgium saying they want people to combat the cases there how do you read where we are right now? >> we will see a pickup in cases, and the delta variant is moving into more populated spread of this delta variant across the u.s it's running its course in the south and southeast, the pacific northwest is coming down, the plain states right now you see the delta variant moving into the southwest, moving into the states around the great lakes, parts of new england, northern new york it's moving into more populated regions that so far haven't been touched by it. you will see it go up and also the fact that we are heading into the holidays, when we know there is a national bump up. i think what we will see is a pickup in cases, an extended plateau and national averages as a result of the sharp decline in states like florida and texas. those are going to stall
