. >> we have former fda commissioner scott gottlieb write in "the new york times" that monkeypox will the late rollout of testing and it fits the familiar of response for covid. is that a fair assessment or no? >> i think it is. i think we can all agree that covid-19 pretty much exposed the deficiencies in our pandemic preparedness and one would think that we would have learned our lesson, but the fact of the matter, hailey is we are woefully underfunded, understaffed and people are exhausted. people have been doing this with covid and it's not like we have a fresh army on the ground. testing only recently did the commercial labs now available to do testing. do you know how difficult it is if you suspect a case in your office to get the testing done it's easier now, but definitely was very, very challenging and probably still is in the vast majority of doctor's offices in terms of the vaccine supply and the strategic stockpile. we have the smallpox vaccine which was expired and there's a treatment, but the treatment is still deemed investigational, and it still requires a lot of work

scott gottlieb on, he tax about what the probable -- i'm not going to call it herd immunity, but howople have now their immune systems have seen covid at this point, and it's a pretty good number at this point. that's why the risk is so much less but you're never going to be able to get to the point where someone who's immune compromised happens to -- you're going to be able to trace something from someone who comes back to work, who had covid, who gives it to someone. do you think those situations where there's still a really bad outcome, is that going to be enough to square people into not following through on this? it's never going to be perfect we don't test for flu every season that there's some nasty flu that kills 50,000 people we could, and you'd want to know, oh, i have flu i've got stay home for the next ten days but that's what we do now. jill and joe biden still wear masks outside walking around they both just had covid why? >> well, i can't speak to the white house or what the biden administration is or isn't trying to do, but i don't think i as a society, you can make r

scott gottlieb. he talks now about this wall of immunity we have built up as americans. if they are boosted, they'll get covid, may get sick for a couple days, but for the overwhelming majority of americans, it's something now that we live with. unfortunately, over a million americans have died by this. >> yeah. >> but it is now something, at this point, we live with. >> it was incredibly frightening, the first year or two of covid, when we had -- remember, our entire show was dedicated to 100,000 dead. you think of how many have died since. it's taken a few years for the world to get its arm around this. a lot of conflicting information. i think, now, we're in a situation where, as you said, joe, it is a little bit different. there are some people where masking still matters. they need to do it. and there are some people who will never put a mask on. i think that's where we're at. but, you know, even kids going back to school now are going back to a little bit more normality, and we can only hope that that continues. >> and that's absolutely critical. there's no doubt,
