a close friend and band mate of yours lost his daughter, a 6-year-old girl called anna grace in new town. today is the six-month anniversary of that. for something like that so appalling to hit so close to home, how is that? >> i was watching cnn when it was going down, and i was watching the journalist in front of the school, and i saw a familiar face walk behind her, and i told my wife, i paused it. i said that's jimmy. she came in and we both were horrified, came to find out that he lost his little girl. some time passed. i had been in communication with jimmy, and was profoundly saddened, myself, by it and wrote a song, basically honoring anna grace but also the idea of ultimately, no matter the tragedy, love is going to conquer. i remember jimmy saying that god needed anna a little sooner than the rest of us. so the love that she is experiencing now trumps anything that goes on on earth, and i subscribe to that. >> you've got three daughters of your own. >> right. >> they have all been through that age anna was, 6 years old, presumably gone to elementary school. it's such an innocen

nancy grace still here with me. i so appreciate it. of your show tomorrow night to this particular issue because this all started with star jones. and did she -- she reached out to you saying, basically, help. >> she did. a lot of people don't remember, but i started at court tv, courtroom television network, in 1997. and much later than that star joined us and my last years there. and star reached out to me, over the weekend. i didn't even know about this case. but now that i do know about it, i'm on it. and what concerns me about this case is that it has been basically put on a back burner. whenever there is a woman -- >> why? >> -- found murdered, very often the first thing people think is, oh, some type of domestic abuse and they tend to discount it. here in this case rosalynn ran som l ranson lee, 32 years old, she is found partially clothed, clothed only from the waist up, which leads investigators to believe that she was sexually abused. she was found floating in a lake. here is the tricky thing about the lake. it is not a lake

him. >> rose: the grace? >> yes, the natural -- he had a natural grace. he was very good looking guy and he was funny. >> rose: and war took its toll? >> yeah, i think it took its toll on a lot of men of that generation, you know? because i think -- it's always struck me as rather unnatural for man to kill another man, you know? and whether you do it or whether you see it, it takes its toll on you and it was so -- there's a lot of boys grew up without being hugged by their dad, without being touched by their dad. and that was my experience, you know? so i kind of -- i've been pretty base wick my dad but i thought if i get in trouble i'll think about tom. i'll think what tom would have done and so in that scene it was kind of easy because i was the father and the son, you know? >> rose: and until his death you didn't -- did you hear him say it? >> there was one thing, there was only really one thing, the great joy of my life was that i had been for like the first 25 years of my fame so i was able to really giv

joining me now, jean and grace, thank you very much for joining me on this historic night.gs over time, asked about how your cousin might rule on this. in which you expressed confidence that he would handle this in a judicious way. how do you think he did today? >> i was actually very surprised this morning. i am totally shocked that he split right down the middle, one side for us, one side against us. i was confident before the hearings, and i think the hearings shifted my perspective a little bit. i was definitely a little nervous after the hearings. so of course i was thrilled about prop 8. and of course, i'm disappointed that he didn't rule on our side on doma. >> but he was not in a position to block doma, grace, and here you are able to be married in california thanks to justice robert's vote and others. and then thanks to the other justices that marriage can be recognized elsewhere in the country and by the federal government. >> i really like the way you put that. yes. and jean, the fact that your cousin actually did rule specifically on your side in the case that a

two more people, personal on more than one level, grace and chief justice cousin. jean, your cousin, the majority opinion in the property eight case means that you and grace and millions of other gay and lesbian california residents will be about to get married. it's not like we went to bat for gay rights but the practical impact is huge for people in california. how do you feel? >> huge, i -- i'm so overwhelmed. i'm so excited. i honestly -- i have told everybody that i was expecting this, but it's still a shock. i'm so excited. >> and grace, for you, to have this intimate connection with somebody who is making history like this, how is it for you? >> it's the most amazing feeling, anderson, i'm so proud of jane. i'm so proud of our gay community. we have fought so hard to come this far, and there is more work to do but it's a good day. >> it's a good day. >> jean, you said a few months ago that you know that your cousin, the chief justice is a good man and wise enough to see where the tide of equality is going. on the doma case are you disappointed by his vote? >

i don't know who can live beyond the reach of the grace and mercy.ope she's able to collect herself, acknowledge what she has done, address those that she has offended, clean out the workplace. it's really about the workplace environment. and then put forth some plan. we've done this with several major corporations where somebody leaked some memo and says something very, very wrong. but the idea to condemn people -- the bible says those who attain mercy must be merciful. even as we handle this, it must be a just must always be tempered by mercy to have the right result. >> is your own life experience helping you to be this magnanimous? you know when you ran for president that whole himy town thing. people ultimately forgave you. is that helping you forgive her? >> it's not forgiving, she has to do more than just contrite words. she has to address meaningfully the workers who were offended. to clean out the workplace environment. put forth a plan for reconstruction. it's not just enough to say words and be defensive. she must go on the offense. of cou
