the ousted president of penn state university graham spanier will face cover-up charges in a child sexse scandal. prosecutors today filed counts of perjury, obstruction and failing to report suspected abuse. in addition, they added counts against athletic director timothy curley, and gary schultz, a former penn state vice president. the scandal revolved around jerry sandusky, the former assistant football coach now in federal prison for sexually abusing young boys. october turned out to be a big month for u.s. auto sales. figures out today showed toyota led the way with a sales gain of almost 16%. chrysler reported its best october since 2007 with a 10% increase. g.m. sales were up 5%, while ford's numbers increased not quite half a percent. wall street headed higher after new reports showed consumer confidence and manufacturing on the rise. the dow jones industrial average gained 136 points to close at 13,232. the nasdaq rose more than 42 points to close at 3,020. those are some of the day's major stories. now, back to judy. >> woodruff: after devoting the first half of the week to hu

charges were also filed yesterday against the university's former president, graham spanier.t to be arained next week. >>> the trial of a san jose principal could go to a jury later today. she is on trial for failing to report child sexual abuse allegations against a teacher at o.b. whaley elementary school. she admitted in court yesterday she knew about parents' concerns with the teacher but did not report him because he assured her he wasn't doing anything inappropriate. the teacher was later arrested and charged with committing lewd acts on five children. >>> and more agony for a bay area mother now having to wait several more weeks to find out whether a bone fragment found in a well actually belongs to her missing daughter. a laboratory in arizona is testing that bone to see if it belongs to 9-year-old michaela garecht who disappeared from hayward back in 1988. that fragment was found several weeks ago, but test results have been delayed. authorities at this point not saying exactly why. hayward police say it could be another six weeks before those tests come back. >>> it
