if you get a grammy, if you even have a category for your musical form, at the grammy awards show you say, you can say you have arrived. so at that moment lauren hill hasn't just arrived. she like dominates the gram mys and at one point in time she is collecting one of her awards she is like, all of this from hip-hop, right? now i use that to talk about how we can think of politics because there are a number of different ways to think about politics. like in that moment we can think about the politics involved in getting, in getting the award category that lauren hill is competing for, right? because the grammys only give so many awards zero sum resource. so for every award given some genre or some award that isn't given. so we talk about that competition. we can say at that moment, there is something that happens where space is created for black people not like nobody would ever -- go back to 19 -- i remember reading a "detroit free press" a columnist who isn't with us before and i remember reading in the early '80s talking about rap as if it were a fad. it will come and will be gone
