they hadn't even into the grand canyon itself. when they did, they encountered water in the lakes no one had encountered before. they carried their boats around some of the bad water. lowered their boats with lines but other difficult sections but sometimes, they just had no option but to barrel rate through the worst of it. they encountered whirlpools so strong that they capture the boats and sent them spinning like carnival rides. some whirlpools proved so tenacious that only the help of other boats could get them out. they came up against 15 foot standing waves. skirted and sometimes fell into large gaping holes in the rivers surface. it seemed to defy nature itself. they were buffeted by violent boiling in the water. later men would give names to some of these odd features. haystacks, pillows and rooster tails. what is minute was a new world. in the inner canyon of the grant, they finally came to a point that defied comprehension. they shouted to be heard among the roar of the water which seemed to be all foam, spit, bile. the
